I've just inspected my tank and noticed a fish had got itself stuck in a plant and unfortunately died. It could not have been there for more than an hour or so, as the tank is checked regularly. However, a big spike in my water params has developed, and I'm wondering if this is normal for such an event?

Tank size: 220 litres
pH: 7.5
ammonia: 1.5
nitrite: 2.5
nitrate: 2.5
tank temp: 27 C

I've got a water change going on as I type this to help bring everything down. Is there anything else I should do that would perhaps help it recover faster?

Thanks for any quick responses. :)

Dont feed your fish certaintly for tonight as this will only contribute to ammonia being produced. Keep checking your levels - probably once more tonight and then 1st thing tomorrow.

Can you get any mature filter media from somewhere? This is just in case you are going through a mini cycle!
