so i've been thinking about this for a while, I want to remodle my tank to look like BootHills Graveyard in Tombstone Az. The gravel I have will work, it's a natural color but I did have a few questions about this.

1.) are there any types of paints/permanent writing tools i can use to write on the tombstones to make them look realisic?
2.) i know many rocks hold metal in them, is there any way to tell this without putting them in the tank first?
3.) what can i use for "fencing"?
4.) are there any aquatic plants that look like cactuses?

if i think of anything else, i'll add it on

here's some history if you want it
Nestled on the side of a hill overlooking the Northern portion of Tombstone and just as you are entering town lies one of the most famous cemeteries in western history. Boot Hill Cemetery is known to hold some of the baddest gunslingers that ever tried to take over a town...the Clanton's and the McLaury's. They, having been shot during the infamous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, eventually ended up here to be laid to their final resting place...or did they?

Among all the southwestern shrubbery, the cactus, the prickly pears and dirt are stories that come from locals and visitors alike of visiting Boot Hill Cemetery and taking a picture of someone or having someone take their picture and finding a guest in the picture with them. Now remember, Boot Hill Cemtery is not open at night...EVER!! The local town marshall will certainly come to find out who is entering the cemtery if it is discovered that someone has entered.

The Ghost Trackers and the Movie Mix Production crew did obtain permission for a late night filming in Boot Hill Cemetery and I must say what an experience that was. It was dark, save for one large fluorescent light mounted on the adjoining building at the top of the hill. As you are descending the bottom of the cemetery and down the hill, you have almost no light. It is extremely dark, unusually quiet and very still. It seems that there are not many noises at the base of the cemetery. I cannot say what the reason for that is, except that it may be because of the possibility that spirits are there.

Although photographically, nothing that we could positively say was paranormal was captured on film...the eeriness was enough to make even the most hard core ghost hunter shake in their....boots.

We threw in Les Moore's headstone as it was positively humorous in a place where there is no more humor. The other plot that holds the four headstones are the Clanton's and the McLaury's headstones. They are buried midway down the hill amongst other thieves, people who were shot, stabbed or just found dead somewhere and were brought to be buried there. There are even people who are buried there on the hill that have "UNKNOWN" on the headstone because they never knew who it was that had died. There were always people dying. It was unusual when someone died of natural causes

This headstone interested me so much for the history behind it as opposed to the headstone itself. It reads:

"John Swain (Slaughter) Born June 1845 Former Slave Who Came To Tombstone 1879 Died February 8, 1945 Erected By The Personnel At Fort Huachuca And Friends Of Tombstone In Memory Of A Worthy Pioneer"

This was a former slave who made his way to Tombstone to make a life and apparently was successful. He has the last name of Slaughter which must mean that he was taken in by the Slaughter family of Tombstone. He apparently lived out his life as a slave but he died a free man.

i think you have everyone stumped with this one, good idea tho, honestly havent got a clue about most of your questions,im sure there is some sort of aquatic paint out there, just a matter of looking.most rocks sole in fish shops will be safe,if possable, you could buy a bit of rock and cut it into a tombstone shape? for the fencing, im thinking lollypop sticks, lol. glued together with aquarium sealent if it will work, again there is loads of different woods out there, one must be what your lookign for,not sure about aquatic cactuses but for the trees ive seen around wood thats shaped into old and dead trees.that would look good.maybe a bushy plant would substite for a catcus.
whats going in the tank?if it all works, please post pics as i will be very interested in what it looks like

im sure there is some sort of aquatic paint out there

mk, i'll look around.

i was trying to avoid fish store rocks, they're really expensive. i have a few "tombstone" shaped rocks i want to try, but only if they won't hurt the fish.

for the fencing, im thinking lollypop sticks, lol.

my mom suggested cardboard around the outside of the tank - cheap and it doesn't have to go in. lollypop sticks would be great for that idea too.

for the trees ive seen around wood thats shaped into old and dead trees.that would look good

i like.

maybe a bushy plant would substite for a catcus.

i'll try that, too. some of what i have may work as "desert" plants. kind of an oxymoron - desert water plants  .

whats going in the tank?

at the moment, there's guppies, sparkling gouramis, glowlight tetras and pygmy catfish. the matae were moved until i can rehome the gouramis as they're picking on the mataes and the guppies. it was taking a toll on poor Morgan (Morg, Wyatt and Virgil are my mataes - the Earp brothers :hyper: ). I hope the name didn't curse him...

if it all works, please post pics as i will be very interested in what it looks like

I'll be glad to post pictures.

tank set up:

the lines above the graves will be the tombstone and if i can find paint it'll have those people's names on them and what their real tombstones say. if only the Earps and Doc were burried there...

got ur PM mate, looks a good set up, hope it all works out for you, i prefer tanks with themes to them, much better than just ordanary planted one(no offence people out there)your cories will have a fun time swimming around the gravestones

yeah. as long as morgan survives. he's not doing so well. i swear his name cursed him - Morgan Earp was the first of the "main" three Earp brothers to get shot and killed.

clay. Make the tombstones crosses fence etc out of clay and get them fired. easy to write on while it's still wet too. It also comes in many different colors so you can pick and choose. Be carefull though not all clay is safe for aquatic life.

i love both of your ideas. i have some clay that you bake and it gets hard. its polymer clay, do you think it would work? the website for it is www.sculpey.com

dorkhedeos - do you know where i can find moss balls?

edit: on the paper i found something that said it's non-toxic

okay, i moved the large red rock into shadow's tank in exchange for plants - he loves it. it would have looked great, but it would have been wayyyyy out of proportion. i'm obsessed with things staying in proportion. i shifted the plants in a little line along the back and ran the rocks i found under burning hot water twice. i'm going to be adding them in as the 'graves' shortly.

I don't think the polymer clay will hold up under water. I'm not thoroughly familiar with it however so you should contact the manufacturer and see what they say. how big do you want these tombstones to be?
