I've had my BGK for about a year and he's around 6 or 7 inches the problem is that he is always in his log and i never get to see him out and swimming. He won't even come out more than a few inches with just moon lights on. I don't wan't too put in one of those ugly clear tubes and i don't want to take away his log, even though he will probably outgrow it within a year.

What can i do to make him less shy?

This is a common trait among BGK as they are a nocternal species. I 'm forunate enough that mine swims around day or night. Try feeding him after lights out and you may get to see it more often, especially if you start turning your light off a bit earlier. Other than tempting with a favorite food you may only be able to watch it swim about in the middle of the night. I guess you could try handling it, such as try petting it and/or hold it. I can hold mine in one hand and feed with the other, although this takes time. Good luck.
