BEWARE

How did your tanks survive 5 days of no power? I know you have some big tanks but also some special fish. I hope they all did ok. I'm guessing your plants were safe?

Internet, well, we missed you ;) but you & we can live safely for 5 days, lol.

Ok - some-events - around 7:05 Sunday power goes out - 7:06 backup generator for fishes goes on - so they get to stay toasty warm while my bedroom drops to 48. Internet kept working till around 8 or 9 sunday and then it went out. Nearest cell tower went out at some point - i think monday morning or sunday night so phone has spotty reception and no internet. Today (friday) around 2pm generator stopped working after a bit of driving to get supplies and contacting a repairman (it is under warranty); around 7:05 pm generator starts working so there is 5 hours without power - and the ram tank did drop 5 degrees so i'll find out in a month if it bothered them. at 7:10 power is restored (yea 5 minutes after they fix the generator). btw in trying to obtain parts many stores that are listed as open you will discover are closed when you reach them so search took around 4 hours.

Also when i drove through several areas less than a mile from where i live there are still a ton of broken power lines and down poles so i was pretty surprise power came on but our lines are buried and they probably wanted to get the main road up so the traffic lights would work after all we all know that traffic lights are the foundation of civiliziation.

Still more than 100K are still without power and i know several people within 2 miles that still don't have power. I didn't take picture but it is pretty shocking to drive down a street 5 days after a bit of ice to discover power lines laying across the road or ground and many poles splintered or broken. Down the main street it is really sad to see the 100s of very old trees either fallen or split in 1/2 from the weight of their branches putting too much stress on the trunk. Oh well it'll take decades to replace all the trees if not longer. Some of them were really majestic. Not much we could do i think to prevent their damage - maybe in the 80s if we started to acted instead if burying research in vaults for fear of impact on a little bit of profits things might have turned out better but who knows.

With climate change, we're seeing some wild southern weather creeping up, and it isn't easy to deal with. But the weather event I fear is an icestorm. I've seen those all my life, as opposed to those newfangled hurricanes and tornadoes, and icestorms are to be respected.

Sigh, ice storms. When I lived in Ft Worth Texas we'd get black ice storms 2-3 time each winter. Snow and normal ice I can deal with but black ice is a different matter. Unless you have tire chains you just can't safely drive and who in Texas has chains?

Well with this ice storm thick ice is still on many trees 6 days after the event. My poor little willow was bent down but luckily when the ice melted off it (it gets direct sunlight) yesterday it snapped up.

I had a number of white birches right on the ground last time, but after they snapped back up, they seemed fine. That was uncertain though - ice is a big killer of birches around here.

Yea - sadly my male gold ram isn't too happy this morning. His aquarium lost about 5 degrees during the outage yesterday (2 to 7 pm). The discus tank was in the warmest area of the room so and much larger volume of water so they only lost about 1.5 degree - the ram tank was a little 10 next to the door - and the room dropped 8 degree during those 5 hours. Everyone else is pretty durable and i haven't noticed any odd behavior so far. I was most concern about the d39s since they are a lovely fish that are just about impossible to replace as well as the discus which i am quite fond of - i need to get those young geo out of their aquarium as they are not good tank mates.

I'm glad most of your fish survived well & you too, of course. Ice storms are worse than heavy snowfall IME. Thank goodness you have a generator!!

Are you apt to be hit by the next round of storms? Geez, before many places have started to recover. Maybe a blanket or towels over your small tanks?

Hang in there!

Safe from storms right now but who knows what will happen. Suppose to get in the 50s next week; after a low of 3 this week.
