I am giving one of my 10 gallon tanks to a friend who desperately wants a Betta. I have harlequin rasboras and neon tetras already. My lfs has a few male bettas in tanks with schooling fish and they seem to get along pretty well. Could she add one of them to this tank? Or would the betta try to attack the neons because they are colorful?

I'm thinking the 6 harlequins, 6 neons and 1 male betta will overstock my tank. But I have a 20 gallon filter on it. Would it be okay with 6 harlequins, 6 neons, and 1 male betta? I have a log that the betta can hide in and some fake bamboo coming out of a rock. Should I add more decor too? There is also a bubble wall along the back.

defiantly not 2 groups, even though you have the filter its the space that matters.

IMO Harliquins & Neons are too big,you need to be looking at Micro Rasboras, thats way you could have a group of 10-12 & your betta

I agree here. Neons and rasbora tend to do better in 15+ gallons IMHO. A good sized group of 10 microrasbora such as chille rasbora or galaxy rasbora would look nice in a 10 gallon. Alternatively there's ember tetras which are simialr, just not rasbora

Alternatively, a group of 6-8 pygmy cories would do well in a 10 gallon with a betta and seem a popular choice. Some male endlers might also be an option :good:

I agree. A 10 gallon tank is too small for 2 different schooling fish in the minimum numbers of 6 each. As far as them getting along with a Betta I've heard they can although I haven't had them together myself.

Purchased 6 Harliquin rasboras today and put them in the betta tank, the betta is chasing them around but they are way to fast for him, so I am hoping he will get used to them in the next couple of days and stop chasing them.

If it does not work they will go in my main tank :good:

Ok so what about a 10G with 10 Cardinal Tetras, 6 Zebra Danios and My Betaa?

I txink a xroup of xarlequin rasboras is fine in a 10 xallon tank. Txey only xet a tad over an incx lonx, and lackinx an extra 4 incxes of lenxx txat a 15 or 20 xallon tank would xive is ratxer trivial to a fisx txats main purpose is survival and breedinx. I know people are xoinx to advise dwarf rasboras and pyxmy cories and sucx, but I personally xave never seen eitxer eitxer of txese fisx species in stores.

Yes, dwarf rasboras would be better txan xarlequin rasboras, but txink about it, wxat are you really denyinx a xroup of xarlequins (wxicx are still very small in comparison to otxer scoolinx fisx in trade) by puttinx txem in a 10 xallon tank?

Txeyll still xave plenty of room, maybe even live plants, rexular water cxanxes, a xood diet, and suitable tank mates and water conditions if youre an attentive owner, txeyll care more about txat txan xow bix txe space txeyre in is.

so youre really denyinx a xisx 4 incxes of space by puttinx txem in a 10 instead of a 15. It seems like txat 10 xallons is too small txinx is just beinx spewed and copy pasted rixxt from txe bexinners resource center.
