Ok I give up on betta's. I have a 5 gal tank with filter heater and is cycled with stats being perfect. I just got the third betta 2 days ago and its dead already. No signs of ick or other obvious symptoms on the fish but yet they keep dieing. I have plants and 2 caves for them to chill in but yet I can't keep them alive. Anyone else have this issue?

Stats for hell of it are :

Amm 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10
PH 7.2

Temp between 72-75f

Hmm well you don't have anything wrong with your stats thats for sure.

Where are you buying you bettas from?

Stress can also kill fish if it has had a traumatic journey.

What did the fish behave like during the time you had them?

Is the tank second hand? Its possible it was cleaned with a chemical that wouldn't show up on a test kit. And what type to test kit do you use? Is it out of date?

Have you been getting the fish from the same dealer? If the problem isnt with the tank itself, then perhaps its a problem with the LFS's stock. Have other types of fish lived in the tank without issues? When I get a "new" second hand tank, I buy a feeder fish and throw it in (after cycle) for a month to "test it" (my pond is well stocked with an assortment of feeders lol) I find it better in the long run, I have found some tanks are reptile only this way.

Test kit is API master kit and is not out of date. I've had guppies in this tank without any issues before and tetras before that without any issues. This third time I got the betta from some place else and still had same issue. Since its obvious I won't be able to find out what is causing the casualty's I'm giving up on bettas and guess will try a dwarf puffer fish in the tank.

Don't give up!

I think the problem is the LFS stock, try a different place and pick the healthiest looking fish there, mine are rescues and have survived well generally bettas are a hardy speciese so i honestly think it could be the LFS.

really sorry to hear about your bettas  we have them too a few of ours are living in a large flower vase they say they do live better in them for some reason no idea why but a few of our other bettas are still in our 6ft tank and they are fine.

maybe just the weather as been really hot lately.

Hm..then its not the tank. I suggest you find a completely new dealer. When you look for a betta, try to get one that will flare....Ive found the sick ones wont flare up. But Dont give up!! They are so worth it in the end!

Are you local ???

if so if you want to you can have some of ours ours are all really healthy but our fry wont be ready for at least a month. would you be interested ? as we do have millions.

dont give up on bettas! They are wonderful fish, Dwarf puffers are as well but they can be even more sensitive.

Try a breeder instead of a bog standard shop bought fish. You will know where it's come from, what it's bloodlines are and so on. You will pay more for it, but they tend to be much better looking fish and generally a lot healthier if you can find a breeder near to you ( or near enough to post the fish within
a day or so )
