How often does a healthy Betta go to the surface of the tank for air? Do they do it regularly even when the tank is in a good condition? Apologies if this has been asked somewhere else before.

im not 100% but when i had cloud he use to go to the top alot....but thats because he was always above the filter when i was not near his tank lol, i think its something you shouldnt be worried about as i think its healthy enough....

Thats ok then, I'll keep that in mind thanks. Do you have a bubble air filter in your tank? I'm thinking of getting one for my 57 litre tank. I was also wondering how loud they are outside the tank and which is the best one to get for that size of aquarium. Any ideas?

im sorry, my betta past a few months back so no i deffinatly dont have a pump in "his" tank, however i do use a pump in anouther tank its a airtech 2KO, pretty old now i think but it does the job fine and has rubber feet so you can only hear it if you go within say 3ft otherwise its silent :) if your going to get a pump for your betta tank put it away from where your betta "hides" as most bettas like calm water...ive only read of a selective few that didnt mind a high flow!

the best air pump is tetratecs, I have one thats up to 60l tank and my god its quiet!

I dont use it mind as bettas dont like too much flow

Thanks alot, I'll definitely have a look at these types of filters.

do you mean filter or air pump?

I mean an air pump. I think this would be better because it would have less current than an internal filter for a betta. Is that right?

An air pump on it's own won't do anything unless you attatch it to a sponge filter. Which is what I presume you intend to do? Sponge filters are a very good choice for bettas, as they produce little to no current. They are very often used in fry tanks , and so are safe for bettas.
