I have a male betta which I have owned for around 2 years and in the last week his fins are turning white from the body outwards.
He is in good health showing no signs of illness what so ever and eating well the tank parameters are ammonia 0 nitrate 0 nitrite 20 ppm temp 24.8 c
Tank size 120 litres and heavily panted there has been no changes or new editions to the tank

Isnt 24c low for a betta? Other then that iv never seen a fish fin change colour:s

If the fins are changing colour it could be fin rot, Worth looking into.

You say you have owned him for 2 years, do you have any idea of how old he was when you got him?

I have not come across this directly myself but my research on this subject identified a similar story to yours whereby it was believed that Bettas can do this as they age (?).  I found info with pictures of a Betta going from Red, to a white face etc, until the whole body is white with only a little red left on his tail fin.  I am not 100% sure if I can link to this other site or not?  I have the link if I am able to use it - please could a moderator advise?

If he is still eating OK and not showing any signs of distress just monitor him and see what occurs.  My old Betta has generally got darker rather than lighter, he just sits on the aquarium floor all day and just comes up for his food.  Sometimes though he will jump for his food so there is energy in him yet.

I agree with "Daveo026" that the temp is a little low, I keep my Bettas at around 80F+, that is I think about 26+C

Can you upload a picture of him?

Hi thanks for your replies, he was fully grown when i brought him so i am guessing he was around 1 year old, which would make him approx 3 years.
He is showing no signs of illness what so ever and he is eating and pooing fine.

I have attached a video and its near impossible to get a picture of him

It is a short video but from what I can see it is his dorsal fin that seems to be going white - is that correct?  He also seems to be happily swiming around.

I am no expert on this but I have read that if going white from the gills it can be ammonia poisioning - but in your case your parameters do not suggest this, a betta can have the marble gene and change colour (because of his age not sure that would be the issue?), or as per my previous post he is possibly ageing if all else seems well.  As before my old fighter has gone darker rather than lighter, so not sure what makes the difference.

You may wish to post in the section http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/forum/2-tropical-fish-emergencies/ as there are people far more expereinced than me that may have more idea what might be happening.

Good luck with him and keep us posted as it is always interesting to know how things progress.

Just a quick update the betta is doing fine and seems very happy, the dorsal fin has stayed white hopefully it is just due to age
