Hi, I have a nice Male Betta and was wondering how many females should be added with it?? I've had him about 5 months and recently saw a nice blue female (quite large) at my LFS. Will she get chased too much if only added one??
(or is 3 correct?)

Pic. to follow..

Hi. Unfortunately you cannot keep any amount of females in with a male. They would have to be in a separate tank and if you want more than one female you would need a minimum of 4 or more to spread out the bullying with plenty of hiding places for them.

Would love to see a pic of your male :D

Bummer! So is it only at specific breeding farms that they produce young Betta>

I'm sure I have seen Females/Male mixes in shops and on various YouTube clips; of Betta Spawning.
Thought it would be nice to give him company, but might not after advice. (may upset harmony in aquarium)

Cheers.

it is possible to spawn your bettas at home (but can be tricky and expensive and requires lots of space!) but its not just a case of sticking them together. they can only be together temporarily under the correct conditions, and as soon as they have mated he will get very aggressive with her and attempt to chase her away! some people have put females with a male, either by mistake or going on bad advice, and sometimes they can co-exhist happily for several months, but this situation can turn nasty with no warning. people have posted about how well their tank was doing and then one day they came home to dead fish.

to be honest male bettas tend to be a solitary kind of fish and most of them are happiest alone. don't worry about giving him company. is he in a community tank? what else do you have with him?
