Bettas And Platy's, Probably Not Right

Can a betta get along with platty's? I'm guessing not am I correct?

thanks :good:

You 'can' put a betta into anything. it is possible if you had the money to put a betta into space. But it wouldnt be good for the fish :p But like so many other betta questions it depends on the fish's personality. But it is always reccomended to keep a betta on its own, or maybe with a ADF or a snail, i think even ottos might be ok, but i wouldnt quote me on that. The main reason behind keeping a betta on its own is cause it might look ok for the first two three days maybe even weeks or months, but it could all go wrong in an instant. and then u got some dead uns

What size tank?

If you mean a small bowl or critter keeper or similar 'typical' betta tank, I agree with the above. But in a normal-sized community tank - like a 15 gallon, say, I've kept bettas with platies without any problems.

I've kept bettas in communities with platies with no problem, but he was like the most mild mannered betta ever... Female bettas seem to get along great with platies!

depends on the platy too - i had a very placid betta - and the platy would harass him! The betta would flare and scare him away... but the platy kept coming back for more... : >

try it out - if it doesn towkr - seperate them or return the platy... ( cause every1 keeps the betta :) )

My betta is in a 5.5 gallon planted tank with another oto. He's more concerned about eating than bother the oto. Well if it doesn't work I could put them in my 29. :good: Guess I'll have to try it, would a female or male matter in the platys?

thanks

I wouldn't try it in that size tank. Personaly, I'd also never keep platies alone. Whoever was talking about the bully platy was probably keeping it singly. If you keep a trio, the platies would ignore the betta. If you're going to try it with a single platy though, you have to weigh up the good and bad points of getting a male vs female platy - a female would be less likely to bother the betta and better able to defend herself due to size, but a male would be less likely to overload your tank in terms of bioload because of his size and he won't come in pregnant (and remember females can store sperm for several months) :p
