My current betta tank is a 2.5 gallon which I currently have lit with a small compact fluorescent desk lamp and planted with non-rooting plants like Java Moss and Anarachis. Eventually I want to upgrade the tank to a 5 gallon with enriched substrate so I can plant some dwarf hair grass, and maybe some other smallish plants. I also wanted to put a small DIY CO2 system in...I figured I could limit the output slightly by using a 1 liter bottle instead of a 2 liter, and that it's awfully difficult to overdose a normal sized tank with DIY CO2, but is there anything I should be concerned about. I know bettas breathe atmospheric oxygen via their labyrinth organ, but since I'm not familiar with gill function I just wanted to know if higher concentrations of CO2 in the water would inhibit their ability to "exhale".

I use excel in my tanks and bowls. I find it easier than the DIY co2, if you have a high light with the CO2 you will be constantly trimming plants in a smaller tank.
