I have 3 X Tiger Barbs
3 X Green Tiger Barbs
2 X Silver Dollars
1 X pleco

Will it be possible to keep a male betta? - I know my current fish have a beig tendancy to be fin nippers....will they bother a betta?

Thanks

I wouldn't risk putting a Betta in the tank especially if you know your barbs are fin nippers. If you really want to keep one then you are best getting a small tank and keeping him by himself. ;)

The barbs would definately attack the betta, no doubt about that- its really not worth risking it. The betta would be much happier in a 2gallon+ tank on its own with a little heater and filter :good: .
If you are thinking about getting anymore fish, you should get more silver dollars if your tank is big enough for them, as these are fish that do best in groups 5-6 or more, like the tiger barbs. They are also mostly herbivorous fish, so giving them a good diet is very important for their health- you can get frozen cubes of veg for fish or feed veg based flake foods like the ones done by TetraPro  .

The barbs are gonig to attack the betta because they are known to be fighter fish and like to fight with each other and i could see it now, a male betta being in the wrong place at the worng time :( Well you could always get a small 2-5 gallon tank and keep betta (s). Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!

Tiber barbs are not always as agressive as some may think. None of my Tiger barbs attack any of the fish in my community tank and that includes a betta, cherry barbs, gold barbs, angelfish, dwarf guaramis, platies, swordtails, guppies and minnows. I'd say try it out and see.

I'd second that to a degree. I can't say for Barbs because I've steered away from them as they are a known aggresive fish, but my Betta lives happily with no probs with 3 mollies in his tank althoughwith the tank being 125Ltr and there only being the 3 molls and 1 betta plus 2 ground dwelling plecs, theres plenty of 'running' room.

IMO I'd stay away from Barbs & Bettas (although I can't say from experience) but friendlier fish (although still recognised as fin nippers like mollies and platys from experience are OK. (Guppys no because their tail is very fancy and long and Mr Betta may think the gupps are competitor Bettas)

As for the plecs they chase each other and ignore the small fish (who all get out the way n e ways)
