I had an air stone in each side of my bettas tank and i took it out today to see if they like the calmer water. DO they need an air stone? Someone told me they are surface breathers so dont need one and will appreciate the calm water. Will it affect my water quality if i permanently remove the air stones? I had cut down the air flow but then realised they may not even need them...

Doesn't need one at all. All you need is correctly heated and dechlorinated clean water. A nice tank with some plants and what not and a good food and your sorted.

Yeah, they don't need one. Most bettas prefer calm water, though there will always be the exception!

So will an out-of-tank 20 gal Aquaclear filter on a 10gal tank bother them? Even on the lowest setting?

Not familiar with that filter......if it's too strong then you may have to find a way of diverting the flow or making a deflector of some sort.
