 I have a Betta in a 10 gallon planted tank looking for bottom dwellers ( scavengers ) and one are two other fish any Ideas would be helpful. Been thinking of freshwater clams, or crabs

A small shoal (5 or 6) of otos (if you have a lot of algae) or dwarf corydoras (if you want help catching food from the bottom) would be your best bet (but cories do need sand rather than gravel).

Do bear in mind that no bottom feeders actually eat poo; you still have to pick that up yourself, and they do need proper food of their own, they can't live just on what falls to the bottom.

Oh, and while they might help pick up bits of food the betta's missed they, of course, produce their own poo and ammonia!

Freshwater clams don't do well in tanks (or even in ponds, for that matter); they'll just die and pollute the water, I'm afraid.

I know nothing about crabs, but we do have a dedicated invertebrates sub-forumHere where I'm sure someone will be able to advise you :)

NO CLAMS! These are not a good idea, as stated above. As for the crabs, I guess it depends on what you get. Most of the crabs need a land area, unless they are crayfish and they will most likely eat your fish. There are some micro crabs that will work, but I don't know anything about them. Welcome! :good:

Seems like crabs might enjoy a nice bite or two out of the betta's tasty flowing fins!

If you want a scavenger, you would be best off with a few Amano shrimp. Clams need very specific conditions and I would think a regular crab would attack your Betta. I personally looked into getting some micro crabs for my shrimp tanks but they are very difficult to keep and your betta would eat them as they are the size of a dwarf shrimp.
