Tank size: 10 gallons, filtered, heated
pH: 7.2
ammonia: unknown
nitrite: unknown
nitrate: unknown
kH: unknown
gH: unknown
tank temp: 82 (slowly raised from 78 over the last 24 hours)

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):
Fish was absolutely fine (as she has been for the past 6 months that I have owned her) until about 4 days ago. 2 days prior to this sickness, I'd seen a small dead spider floating at the top of the tank. I figured that since my Betta loves bloodworms, she might like a spider as well. I left it in there and thought she had eaten it because I didn't see it for the rest of the day. Next afternoon I spotted it floating against the tip of the tallest rubber plant in the tank. I took a net and fished it out. The next morning, my Betta had developed a strange, bristly fuzz on her rump, near her tail and there was some fuzz on a couple pieces of leftover food. I had never seen fungus like this before. I consulted a friend who owns a lot of tropical fish and he said to do a complete water change and clean the plants and rocks really well. He said it may have been a venemous spider that tainted the water. I did as he said, added the usual water conditioner, and 1 spoonful of "Ick Away", which states that it treats Fungus and Parasites. 24 hours later, there was ZERO improvement. I changed 25% of the water and crossed my fingers, but yesterday her situation became even worse. She developed a red and white coloured sore on the lower right side of her belly, almost as if she'd been punched. Panicking, I went back to my friend for advice this morning. He told me to take the fish out of the tank and gently swab off the fungus with a Q-tip that had been dipped very lightly in hydrogen peroxide and to be sure that it got nowhere near the gills. I did this, and only managed to remove half of the fungus, leaving behind small, gaping holes in my fish's body where the fungus had been. She is currently back in the tank, looking utterly miserable and swimming along the bottom in a way that looks to me as if she's in pain.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: Currently 25% water change every day

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: Water conditioner, Ick Away by Wardley Essentials

Tank inhabitants: 1 female Betta

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): One green plastic plant

I am sick to my stomach over this. It is absolutely heart-wrenching to watch my beautiful little fish suffer like this. I don't know what else to do for her. This looks like a very deep-rooted fungus that literally came out of nowhere! I have never had a problem with her tank before, nor with my 55-gallon tropical tank. Could this be some kind of poison or contamination from the spider? It's the only thing that seems to make sense. She looks so terrible right now that I don't know if she'll make it through the night. She's currently struggling to swim a little and keeps floating towards the top. Her colour is starting to fade.

Please... any advice will be graciously received. I'm on the verge of tears for this poor little fish. No living creature should have to suffer like this!

ICK away wont treat fungus
you need to do a 2x 90% water change - get rid of the meds

When you re add the water only add 5 gallons of water - so the level is lowered - so she doesnt have to struggle to swim to the surface to get air

you need to get anti fungal treatment - MYAXZIN (spelling) works well with bettas with fungus - its a 5 day treatment - REMEMBER only treat for the 5 gallons you have in the tank

Remove the plastic plant from the tank - plastic plants are scratchy and can damage bettas - live or silk plants are best

Removing the fish and peroxiding it was NOT a good idea you can do more harm then good - i'm not sure she will survive

Thank you, Pip. I'll try everything you mentioned. I do realise now that I probably shouldn't have taken her out and tampered with her with the hydrogen peroxide and swab. I was panicking and listened to the first advice I received.

dont worry hun - you just did as you were advised

good luck hopefully your little girl will pull through - she might not be as pretty as she ever was but at least she'll be with you

Hope you didnt think i was being offish hun was just trying to get the info to you as quick as possible

take care -- PLEASE keep me informed hope she pulls through

actually, ive used peroxide on fish before and it worked very well. but i wouldnt advise you to do that kind of treatment again. pimafix works very well on fungus if you have any of that. addition of aquarium salt may also be beneficial (makes the water less habitable for funguses and bacteria). if you have any of that 1teaspoon /gal would be enough.
keep up with waterchanges. clean wate rwill be the best and most important thing. turn down the temp to 76 in the tank if you are able with your heater. lower temps=slower growing bacteria and fungi. that may make her more lethargic tho so keep that in mind.
for her balance problem feed her a cooked deshelled chopped up pea and starve for a day after. see if that helps.
agreed that you should remove the plastic plant and replace with live or silk.
is she still eating?
doubtful it is collumnaris as started near her butt. usually on the mouth or as a saddle on both sides of the dorsal fin. i dont think for a second that it had something to do with the spider. most likely scraped herself on the plants and infection set in.
BEST of luck with her. let us know how you get on.
cheers

Hi guys. Thank you for the help and advice. I have done the water change and added some aquarium salt, but unfortunately, my little girl is diminishing. Her colour is very faded now and she's bleeding from the holes in her body where the fungus was. She'd been at the surface of the water for a bit, then floated back down to the bottom in a sort of slow motion nose-dive. She currently has her nose in the rocks and her rear in the air. The fungus actually seems to have thinned out a tiny bit, but she is barely breathing. She is not eating at all, but she had been eating up until this morning. I am getting the medication first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, I share a vehicle and my roommate has taken it for the night. We are in the mountains where there is no public transportation and the nearest pet shop is 16 miles away. Otherwise, I would have walked or taken the shuttle. I have my fingers crossed for my poor girl. This is one of the saddest things I've ever seen. I'll be in touch soon and thank you again.

By the way, can anyone tell me if it's better to leave the tank light on or off? I heard from one source that fungus doesn't like light, while another said that it thrives in bright light!!!

She is fighting hard to win over this fungus! She looks raggedy and absolutely dreadful but she really seems to be saying, "I'm going to get better!" I've given her the recommended medication and taken the plants out of the tank so she doesn't reinjure herself. She's swimming around (albeit slightly wonky) and going up for air. She even ate the pea I put in the tank! I have my fingers crossed and am monitoring her closely. Will keep you updated, and thanks!!

can we see a picture of her? im really sorry for you the poor thing, hope she pulls through :)

Will do. Thank you!! :good:

This is the best picture I was able to get of her today. Unfortunately, I don't own a quality webcam. Sorry. :/

She's looking better than she did yesterday, but still terrible. Her poor skin looks so raw around the fungus area.

awwww bless her - she doesnt look too bad though hun - i've seen a lot worse - ones i've rescued in terrible condition

My girl took a turn for the worse this morning. I woke up and not only had the water completely clouded over, she was laying on her side, barely breathing. I quickly did a 90% water change and added a small amount of medication. She hasn't moved at all. There was a horrible stink coming from the tank, as well. I've been keeping the water clean, and she has an airstone to keep the water moving and provide oxygen, so I think it's probably the fungus making that terrible smell as it eats away at her. She looks really bad. I'm not giving up hope, though.

Sadly, my little girl passed away a few minutes ago. Thank you all for your help and suggestions. At least she's out of pain now.
