I noticed that one of my bettas appeared to have a sore mouth yesterday (she didn’t come up to eat) I tried to catch her to separate her and she was swimming strongly. I looked at her with a magnifying glass and it looked like she had a tiny red mark on the bottom of her mouth and one on the top. This specific girl is stunted; I bought her that size and she’s the only one that hasn’t grown; she’s about an inch in length whereas all the other girls I have are twice her size (I did have her sister who also appeared to be stunted but I lost her to dropsy earlier this year). I’ve had her since July/August time; she was in a 14 gallon tank with other female bettas and a nerite snail, 25/26 celsius. I have now separated her into a 1.5 gallon tank (so I can keep her downstairs and keep a closer eye on her). Her fins were a little clamped but then I don’t blame her at the minute lol. I did add a small amount of aquarium salt to her tank (not the full dose it recommends as I’d rather try a little first, make sure she is ok, water change and then add the full dose).

I did notice the other day that it looked like she had a scale loose around her mouth (I figured she’d just knocked it on something), the loose scale is still hanging there.

I do have Macryn (I think that’s what it is called – the stuff that turns the water blue) but I didn’t think it looked like “fungus/rot” as of yesterday. I can’t take a photo as the detail won’t be picked up as its sooo small.

Yesterday I temporarily moved her to a critter keeper to get a good look at her and then into the 1.5 gallon tank; and when she was in the critter keeper she was interested and attention seeking; however she just didn’t eat.

Should I keep up the salt treatment for a few days and see how it goes or should I try something else?

I’ll defrost some yummy blood worm tonight and add a bit of garlic juice to see if I can entice her into eating .

The main issue is I’m going away for a few days on Thursday; I should be back Monday evening; but my mam is going to be looking after her; so as simple as possible would be ideal.
