in our old apt my daughter wanted fish so i got her a betta. she is 4 so it worked. now we have a house and her room is a bit smaller so no tank in it although i have a 40 breeder up with guppies and swordtails. would the betta be ok with them? i never paid much attention to this type of fish i just dont have a spot for her little tank and its easier to maintain the 40.

Male betta don't tend to mix well with anything with colourful and/or long flowing fins so guppies and betta in the same tank are a no no....i speak from experience, the guppy is still regrowing the tail.
Basically i'd say the betta is best left in a tank on his own.

i have to disagree. i have a male crown tail betta in a tank with 6 guppies and 6 platies and he gets along quite well. he stays to himself and doesnt bother anyone.

I have a veiltail male Betta with 5 male guppies and oto cat for like a month now, my Betta is not really friendly with them but just ignores them. They just have to move out of his way where he's going. He used to chase them occasionally when they were in a 10g but ever since I transfer them all to my 20g I never seen him chase them once. Plus i think the guppies and oto cats are faster than him.

However I have to put him in a floating breeding trap during water change, he chase them when there's very little water left. I guess the bigger tank the safer.

I have a swordtail with female bettas, first time I put it in the tank the swordtail nipped on the bettas fins then they all started chasing the swordtail to teach him a lesson :) but now they all get along, I think the swordtail's fine tho coz the bettas are too slow for him :) depends on the fish temperament tho, maybe i just got a more relaxed betta.
