I've only just noticed that my blue veil tail betta has fin rot. And the only way I noticed was that his fins were much much shorter - he's quite light in colour so I never noticed any greying of his fins or anything. He's not eating, either. I only have a stress coat medication which I have put in, but I don't think it will do any good. I won't be able to get anything else until next week(there's nothing near us that does anything like that) - but is there anything else non-medicinal I can use to help him until then? :(

give him lots of water changes, remove any uneaten food to keep water clean, when you do get to go the store there are antibiotics the fish eat that help

I use Melafix for fin rot, use it in accord with the directions, keep the water as clean as possible, and add some aquairum salt if you have any, i reccomend getting it if you don't.

Well, I managed to get something for fin rot - although its not melafix. Which apparently only needs used once? I got it because I would be able to get nothing else til later this week, and felt I should at least try something...

My poor boy's fins are so short and he still isn't eating.

Make sure you keep his water clean as this will help with the finrot.
What medication have you got?

How many water changes should I do on a daily basis? He has a filter running, but I did a water change this morning - should I do another one? I've been clearing the uneaten food as well.

It's Interpet - Aquarium Treatment 8 - Fungus & Finrot

If using medication, then make sure that the carbon sponge is removed from the filter.
You only need to change the water if you plan on adding another dose but you must wait seven days before doing a 30% water change. Check page 24 in the leaflet to give you a better idea.

Ok, thanks.

Yeah, the leaflet wasn't extremely helpful. And it also says a "One off treatment". So does that mean I can do a 30% water change in 7 days, then add another dose?

It isn't very clear when you read the instructions. From what I can gather, you add a dose, leave for 7 days and then do the 30% water change. If there are no signs of improvement, then add another dose.
If you can get to your lfs within the next 7 days, then it's worth picking up some Melafix. I used it on one of my boys and it worked wonders!

Yeah, I was looking for Melafix as I've read it on here before. Basically have to rely on parents to get to the only decent LFS thats definitely got it. Will definitely need to stock up on some stuff to prevent this from happening.

As far as I know, and remember, Melafix is a 7 day treatment. And it works amazingly well when I have used it on my fish, you really do see a marked improvement within the first couple days. Good luck with your fish!!

l.michelle - Yeah, the one I got is a one-off thing though, instead of using continuously for 7 days. So if there's no improvement, I'll do the water change and repeat medication.

He's eating now, he actually swam up to the front of the tank and looked at me for a while so I gave him a pellet and he swam up and ate it then - maybe just a coincidence but you never know, lol!
Unfortunately, I think something's nipped my orange dalmation betta who I've now had to remove from the community tank and treat as well - it doesn't look like fin rot but the cotton stuff on his fins instead - Poor guy, he's looking the worst now just kinda floating and occasionally going on to his side. But if you move anywhere near him he'll start swimming in circles.

Having a bit of a bad run with fish at the moment, so it's a total drag. My black knife fish(who was going to get rehomed as he grew) got caught at the side of the filter as well, when we found him he looked as if he was in a bit of a shock but was swimming and stuff. Put in some stress coat for him, but found him dead this morning. :(
Silly guy liked to sleep like in between the tank's back panel of glass and the canister filter, I never thought he'd get stuck though - but now the filter has been moved, so there's a big enough gap for ANYTHING to get through it.

If it's cottony (on your orange betta fish) It suonds like it might be fungus, or well lol probably is fungus, so you may also want to pick up a fungal medication when you go to the pet store, and it is good to have that on hand as well, I use Pimafix for fungus, but if they don't have that, take a look for Maracyn (make sure it is Maracyn and not Maracyn-Two) That also treats fungus and other things as well.
