I have one little guppy left in my 20 gallon community tank which also has 2 sweet albino cory catfish, 2 ottos that I never see (they hide in a cave) and 5 little neon tetras. I've had them for 2 years and they all cohabit wonderfully. I gave up on guppies, they just don't seem to do well. So I have the one little guppy left. Do you think a male baby betta will adapt in the tank? I do have a 5 gallon just in case it doesn't go well, but I need the opinion of an expert.

It wont work out =/ the male will see the guppy's tail as like competition and stuff and think its another male and will attack it

If the guppy is female, it would probably be fine. If it's a male... chances are the betta would attack him because of his long flowy tail, but if the betta is a really laid back kind of guy, you can try it if you really want to. But watch carefully, and be prepared to set up that spare tank. ;)

I have to dis-agree. I have kept bettas with guppies before and they did just fine, it was 3 different bettas(one I had died because he jumped out of the tank and the other was moved to his own bowl because I wanted him there).

were the bettas and guppies males?

Oh, and the tetras might nip at the betta, so you need to watch for that as well.

You think so? they travel together and are very secretive and skittish. Can't imagine them ever doing that.

I'm just telling you what I've read. ;) Tetras are known for being nippy. However, I've heard of people keeping them with bettas without a problem, and then for some others it didn't work out. Your tetras might be fine though, since they're in a decent-sized group and have a tank big enough that they're not bored out of their minds and looking for trouble. :D

The tetras might be okay. =]

And if the guppy is male, I wouldn't do it.
I've had some pretty evil guppies in the past.
They took out my poor betta, Sunset.
Poor buddy.

But uh yeah. You could try, but just watch and be careful.

Oh boy I guess I will NOT try it because one of them will get stressed or hurt. It's not worth it, I can't watch over them 24 hours a day. I will wait until this guppy dies--he'll probably live forever now! haha. I haven't had any luck w/guppies, and I love them--they are so cute!

If you like guppies have you thought of trying endlers instead? Not that you should mix guppies and endlers simply because they interbreed and you lose the pure endler strain which many are trying to preserve.
On the whole Endlers are remarkably strong, hardy fish and breed alot!
