A bit of history. I set up a 20g QT tank a month ago with a seeded filter media from my established 55g FW tank for my new 4 whiteskirt tetras, 6 leopard danios and one male betta whose fins were curled from being in the cup he was in...I thought. All were bought at the same time, same place. I went to the fish store armed w/ my list of compatible fish to pick out...so I thought.

I removed the betta after a week into my 6 month old cycled 10g snail/2 danios and some shimp tank because it appeared the tetras may have been nipping at the betta and the betta seemed to keep to him self in different corners of the tank. After another week I saw his fins slowly looked worse so I put him in his own 10g QT w/ a seeded media filter from the other 10g. No gravel, silk plant and a place for him to lay in. Added aqua salt 1 teaspoon per gallon the first day turned up the heat to 80. Did almost 100% WC second day and added 2 tsp aqua salt per gallon w/ frequent WC's. 3rd week no improvement yet....I added 3 tsp aqua salt per gallon...no improvement still seeing the fins get worse so After 2 more days I bought maracyn plus to treat him with. Did another large WC brought the salt down to about 2 tsp per gallon and treated w/ meds per instructions on bottle. Meds say treat on day 1, 3, and 5 that's it! He is on day 4 w/ visable fin rot conditions getting worse. He has lost half of his back and top tail fin very slowly.

My tank stats:
Temp 80
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
PH 8
nitrate 5.0
water conditoner: prime

I do weekly, every 7 days 20% WC on my small healthy tanks 30% on my large healthy puffer tank. I'm doing large WC's on the bettas QT every two days except I have not while treating w/ maracyn plus. He is fed once a day foods soaked in garlic and vitamins such as mussel, shrimp, bloodworms, weekly and krill once in a while (I feed this to all my fish as I have puffers who thrive only on these foods). I also give the betta a few of the betta ball foods so he will not refuse them. I have been hand feeding the betta so that I do not over feed him. He has been eating this whole time thank goodness and is active. He eats about 6 bites of food a day. He doesn't look thin but IDK if that is a normal amount of food for a betta. Bettas are new to me.

I have never seen this boys fins normal from the fish store. It's going on a month of this illness. Please help me heal him. I found this post here and would like some more advice on the treatment:

"Treatment: Antibiotic baths coupled with anti-fungal baths containing phenoxyethanol are the most common treatments. Improving water quality, reducing stress, and decreasing the risk of injury...."

Can anyone advise me what meds to use to do this. I need the med to water ratio to give the baths and I need to know how often to give the baths. Thanks in advance for your advise.

3tsp per gallon is a lot of salt mydear.

I would recomend some sort of antibacterial meds, and clean water.
Also lower the temps to about 76* to slow the bacteria(im assuming its bacterial because the housing conditions sound fine).

No more than 1tsp salt per gallon.

hope that helps

Best of luck

Thanks for the reply HMPK. Salt and heat was my first treatment. I have already lowered the salt. I will turn the temp down to see if it helps. As I said the fin rot is progressing very slow so perhaps I have done something right to help? IDK... I want to kick this fin rot in the butt and out of my life.

I'm half through w/ the maracyn plus treatment. Is maracyn plus an antibacterial med???Am I being impaitent or should I do more a drastic treatment with Antibiotic baths? I do not to kill my betta w/ meds.

Yes maracyn is a bacterial med.
If you have been using the med three weeks and there no improvement I would stop the med its not doing anything.
I would get some tetracycline but it will wipe the beneifcial bacteria out in your filter.

If the fish is still eating medicated food is the best, but you can't use tanks meds aswell if you use the medicated food.

I started my betta on maracyn plus last monday. He has had the full treatment and is still not showing any signs of improvment. I started adding melafix to the tank last night and will start daily baths of maracyn I think. Turned the temp down to 78, he has 1 tsp aqua salt per gallon. He is still eating well and active.

These shots were taken a few days ago.

Fin Rot is a pain to get rid of!

It somtimes can take longer than the med leaflet says to threat.
If there no improvement I would change the meds.
Melafix is no good on bacterial finrot, it only good to use once fins start to heal to stop them getting infected.

Has anyone done antibiotic baths with success? I know others have elsewhere. I'm just wondering if anyone here has. The person who suggested the baths on this site has not posted since 2005. I looked up a lot of fin rot topics here and most or all of them do not say they had success treating fin rot...Another mystery is what treatment will work for one may not work for another. Fin rot has become resistant it seems. :(.

The maracyn he will be getting a bath in has a different antibiotic the the maracyn plus. I hope it works...........

I wouldn't bother with the baths you need to treat the tank water or medicated food.
