Today I saw my first betta in a vase. The poor thing was all tied up in the root of the plant. A simple red VT but I still felt bad for him, he was covered in fungus and had a very bad case of fin rot. I was going to rescue him but they want $70 (!!!) for it. I was going to ask how much they wanted just for the fish but I honestly doubt they'd have done that. Anyone else ever rescued a vase betta? How much did you have to pay?

That's awful, I despise those vase setups and the people who choose to sell them...

If you really want to rescue him, just ask if you can buy him on his own. Better to try and fail...

The "fungus" is probably columnaris, esp. paired with the rot symptoms. If you do manage to save him, he will need immediate medical care. I could direct you towards my columnaris treatment sheet, if you'd like.

As for the $70 thing... what the hell?? Was it a coca plant with solid gold gravel and a betta that craps 100 dollar bills? Good god. The most I've seen those going for around here is 18 dollars.

WTF?? I was just about to ask if he crapped gold, but RandomWiktor beat me to it

I don't know what kind of plant it was but it looked dead. There was no gravel either. Not to mention the vase was about the size of a 1 liter soda bottle.

I'm actually on Vancouver Island in Campbell River, Wisperian. It was in a grocery store on the customer service desk.

If its a grocery store they most probably bought it from a petsmart or petco as such and placed it in there so i might not have been in the best condition anyway :)

There is no Petco on the island and PetsMart/Petcetera is a 5 hour drive from my town. But yeah.
