I have a 2 gallon tank /w a CT betta that for some reason keeps tearing his fins on things.i've tried taking everything that is sharp out of the tank but he still somehow finds things to tear them on when he's fighting.i know its not fin rot because the fins always grow back within a day of being torn.it doesn't seem to be affecting his health( he eats well, and fights everything in sight) but i know it can't be good for him.what do you think i should do?

hi,
are you sure he isnt being fin nipped by fish rather than his fins getting torn on sharp objects?! persides what kind of ornemants have you go in there?! i dont really understand what he could be catching his fins on need more details

Well, I'm not sure if he has other fish in a 2 gallon (not a good idea)... but do you think he's "rubbing" himself on anything?? He may have a parasite or disease that is causing him to "scratch" himself again objects which may lead to him shredding his fins. It could be ich, velvet, columnaris (flex)... usually this would be a symptom of something??

you say hes fighting? thats prob the cause if hes fighting other fish there prob nipping his tail. not good. im no expert but i dont think you should have him in a tank where hes fighting other fish and damaging his tail

he's in the tank by himself so he couldn't be being hurt by any other fish.i'm pretty sure he doesn't have a parasite because he isn't scratching, swimming wierd, etc. the decorations i have in there are just plastic and live plants( nothing sharp).

what do you mean by him fighting then lol im a bit confused here
sry  i should have explained what i ment by "fighting". everytime anyone comes by his tank or if i put anything near his tank he "fights" it

take the plastic plants out.You can only have silk and live plants with bettas.
thank you :D that should help greatly

Is the filter output to strong, I believe that that was the problem with mine, his fins went very ragged over a couple of days after changing from a undergravel filter to an internal, I have now repostioned his output on the filter and he is no worse.

HTH

A good test you can do for any decorations you put in your tank is to take a bit of nylon (panty hose or something of the sort) and drag it over the decoration. If the nylon catches, so will your betta's tail. On a note about the filter, there is a very simple way to adjust the flow using a pop bottle (lined on one of the pinned threads at the top of this forum) that has worked wonders for Darby's tank.

That's actually a great idea! Also be aware that not all silk plants are safe. While the leaves are silky and soft, often times the rest of the plant is pointy. I went plant shopping yesterday and found this to be true. If you lightly run your finger across them they sometimes are a bit prickly, and imagine a gently little fin swishing across

Thank you to all :D i'm definitely going to go and get him some soft silk plants as i think it was the plastic ones that were hurting his fins

I watched one of my bettas for several minutes today chasing his tail and trying to bite it. He has managed to mangle his own tail. Now I have to watch and make sure he doesn't end up with fin rot until it grows back in.
