Hi all,

My plan it to go ahead and upgrade my Betta's home (currently a 1-gallon drum-style bowl) for a 2-3 gallon set up, which can accomodate a heater.

I take it I should cycle the 2-3 gallon? Should I do a fishless cycle on the 2-3 gallon and keep the Betta in the bowl while doing daily partial water changes? Would the latter be less stressful on him?

Thanks.

i may be wrong so seek further advice but if you move everything over including water then top the water up it will be like doing a 2/3 water change so can go straight in? ask others but thats what i'd think?

fishless cycle is usually better but i doubt it will make a difference in this case.

if you have another mature tank, you could always use the media from its filter and put it in your new tank, this would inst-cycle the tank.
otherwise, just move everything to the new tank, fish included, and make partial daily water changes until the tank is cycled

I recently started up the hobby and am always surprised that people suggest taking media from a mature tank because it could possibly have parasites or something. My first tank with Guppies (purchased in July) has a Camallanus infection so I am trying to fix that tank right now (and that has made me paranoid to take water/gravel from another tank). The Camallanus has been a bad way to start out, but now I'm more determined than ever to be successful :)

Yes, I see your point. I was hoping to cycle the tank more quickly if the Betta wasn't in there. I have about a month before the weather starts to cool off to the point of needing a heater.

Okay, then I'll move my Betta next week. He seems to be doing good. Making nests and watching me through the bowl.
