i just upgraded and now i have an empty 5 gallon (us) hexagonal tank to use for whatever. id like to start a betta sorority but i dont know the details of how to do that. should i get a bigger tank? should i just get 1 more betta for it? wats the best move here?

In a 5 gal. 4 females should work fine. Just be sure to have plenty of plant cover and hiding places for the less dominant females to retreat to.

ok. i was thinking a gravel substrate with a couple of small peices of bog wood and some plants here and there as i can get them.

Actually I have to disagree. I have 4 females in a 7gallon space and I think it's too small for them. I have plenty of hiding spaces, plants, caves, etc... and I just don't think at 7gallons that it's enough room for them. They can get away from eachother ok, but I dunno... I just think the aggression lvl would be drastically reduced if they had the whole 10gals to themselves. So yeah, I can't imagine putting 4 females in a 5gallon hex.
I guess it could work if you get lucky and get females that are docile, but considering the nature of bettas, that's a small bit unlikely heh.

You could try it though, just make sure you have a backup plan if things go wrong. B-)

IDK. I know Jaded had a 5 gal. half hex sorority with 4 females and it worked out well. It all depends on the fish really and what their temperament is. Her tank was also quite densely planted though, which I'm sure helped a lot. If you can I'd say go for a 10 gal., but you can at least try the 5.

i have 6 girls in my 7 gallon (imperial gallons) and they are fine, they squabbled at 1st but now they dont bother each other what so ever

plus i also think it depends on the dimensions of the tank, a hexagonal 7 gallon IMO is too small, but my tank is rectangular, therefor they can swim back and forth till their hearts content, my girls have plenty of space

i think it just depends on layout, and personal choice

ya thats what i was thinking. definitely would like to have a long tank not a tall one. i could heavily plant it and hope for the best, idk. i was just trying to figure out what to do with this left over tank. i thought of using it for dwarf frogs and maybe getting one female betta with them. im really thinking id like a sorority though. it can just be like my little project. im just nt sure i want to put all the money it takes to keep plants alive into a little 5 gallon that im just trying to have a simple little easy project. id rather save that for w much larger tank ya know? ok well ill think about it. thanks for all the advice :good:

im seriously thinking i might just get 1 female and she can have the tank all to her self like my male does in his 5 gallon.

hmmmm i just got a fun idea. i remembered i have an old 55 gallon sitting in the attic. i havent used it cause thats all it is, a tank and the hoods that go with it. but bettas dont need a filter or anything. if i can find the room in my basement i think thats what im gona do. put the 5 gallon in storage and make the 55 my betta sorority project. ill have to build a stand. hmmm that could be tricky. and itll take me a while to get all the decor purchased and set up. well that sounds good, now i have a real project! anybody know how to build a stand for a tank that size? im sure that question belongs in the DYI section lol.
