I know these fish aren’t usually compatible, but do you think I could keep a single pugnax with a single leaf fish in an otherwise empty and very heavily planted 55 gallon? My health is needing me to go to 1 tank and those are my only two fish I really like

If the leaf fish is small and well fed it might be ok but they have a reputation for eating big fish. You can try and see but the betta might get chomped, depending on how big she is.

She’s about 3.2 inches. The leaf fish is about 7 years but isn’t too incredibly huge

Never mind my boyfriend was just helping me do a water change and the leaf fish was found dead. It was a good run, RIP Walter

Would the betta pugnax be okay in a 20 gallon tall? No tank mates

You had us in the first half not gonna lie 🤣

Glad he's doing ok! Bad scare... Whew...

But answer to your first question, I wouldn't. They could very well fight and I would not chance it.

That's so cool you have a leaf fish! Always have admired them! Super cool fish!
