hi was hoping if someone could help me

I have noticed that my betta fish is gasping for air. He is alternating between gasping at the top of the tank, or lying on the bottom.

Ihave checked my ph and its 7, nitrates are between 1mg and 25 mg pl (rubbish pets at home kit lol)

Last water change was last friday due another one tonight (friday is fishnight ;)

I added some new fish about 6 weeks ago so am pretty sure its not overcrowding thats causing the problem. They were without light for 24 hours until I could get some new bulbs but I pointed some laps by the tank just incase.

One of the plants was dying in the tank the other day I noticed and I whipped that out. The little sock filter gets cleaned out every 2-3 days

This is my first tank and I thought I was looking after it well, Am gutted that my little betta is not well hes my fave too!

Has anyone got anyideas?

P.s my otto dies the other week but did all the water tests and they were very similar, put it down to him not liking the tank etc rescued it off a friend as was getting picked on in her tank

Is the water oxygenated enough? Is the filter creating a rippling effect across the top of the water? Do you have an airstone? What are your amonia and nitrite levels? What size is your tank and what fish do you have in in? How many of each?

Hi thanks for the reply but the betta has now gone to fishy heaven :(

The filter on the tank is awsome I have a fluval edge and 4 neon tetras, 2 asassin snails and 2 shrimp. Dont have an air stone but thats going to be my next purchase

can you recommend an amonia testing kit?

Hubby said he will buy me another betta after we have figured out what killed him and dealt with it

Well I use the API freswater Master test kit. It tests for PH, Amonia, Nitrite and Nitrate. It's recommended by a lot of people on here. It's over £30 in the shops but £20 on ebay and that's where I got mine.
