Betta Not Repsonding To Finrot Meds, Please Advise

he is in the tank alone. I have been adding salt to his tank for the past 8 days anyway, was adding as instructed on pack (api salt) 1 tbsp to my 25 litre tank.........
added carbon today and will do large wc tomorrow......should I continue with salt if Ive been adding it all this time or rest that too.....

Just to update I have now done a 100% water change, and added just treated water, nothing else, no salt or melafix or anything. I thought best to leave him in plain water for now, unless I am told or advised differently by yourselves......I was going to see how he went with just the water for now, doing daily 50% changes, or a couple a day if the test readings require it.

Ammonia readings have been virtually non-existent since I have done 50% daily changes, but nitrites still rise a little, requiring sometimes two small changes a day, but only after about 4 days does it seem to rise quickly, it is then I do the larger changes.

His fins have definitely slowed down in progress, the worst loss was the first 5 days, after that it was just the appearance of black edges rather than loss. At first it looked like they were melting, small holes literally grew into missing pieces over hours and days, that has stopped. His fins look a little thin in places, but no more holes. There are a lot of black edges now though, they are still there and not going........it is literally on just the tips of almost all the rays, and on edge of tail centre where the greatest loss was.

He is still eating and happy, playing with things. He has never once appeared ill, other than the fins, so that is something.

usually in thses situation the BEST treatment is clean water(which you are keeping up on)...if you want to, id keep the salt treatment-its good for bettas anyway, but impossible for some folks to do if they have cories or plecs (or other salt sensitive fish) in with their bettas so this is not an option(aslt makes the environment less tolerable to most types of bacteria/fungus/other microbes...keep water changing and redosing and see if that helps before adding melafix at half dose(again if you think you need to)...be advised that from my OWN experience some bettas can not tolerate melafix.
glad he seems to be on the mend :good:
cheers

thanks Guys, will keep up with the daily waterchanges and maybe salt to see how he does. If I do try melafix, it will be a weak dose with a spare tank ready to go in case of bad reaction....
I did notice a tiny pin hole on his dorsal this afternoon, this is new, but Im sticking to the clean, fresh water daily for a while to see if that helps, the myxazin obviously didn't kick this quite into touch, lets hope we can get it sorted...

with such good treatment, are you certain he is not catching his fins on anything?

nah, it's not the decor. He has a cave ornament that I went over every inch of before i added it, sanding any rough bits, only a couple were there and got sanded. He has a terracotta pot, also checked for rough bits and two fake ferns, those neon ones that are made from a rubber/silicone stuff so very very soft, softest I could find......so doubt its anything there. The filter is an internal one with a spray bar, but it has tights over the intake and I made an acetate tube to go over the spray bar so the outlet is directed and diffused to side of tank leaving the surface almost still. He has some frogbit floating on the surface and I added half of an Indian Almond Leaf today with his water change.
Testing twice a day and the ammonia is 0 but nitrites are trying to rise so I am currently doing 2 x 40% waterchanges per day, one morning and one early evening to make sure that reading stays as close to 0 as possible.

He still seems happy, his fins are certainly no worse and the black edges are only on the ray tips and very edge of tail......only been a day or so with just plain water changes, but it seems as good as myxazin so far and I know he's safe and not being over-medicated....he's loving the water changes, he loves chasing the bubbles along the syphon pipe lol

just a quick update..............

After doing 10 days of myxazin, I then went on to do 50% water changes daily adding salt for the first week. Im pleased to say the fin rot has stopped and there is some good clear regrowth on his tail now. However there is still some tiny black edges on the tail, but it can't be rot still as its on the tip of the regrowth.........anyway, pics attached of the progress so you can see the difference. Im still doing daily 50% changes.
