You know those "Bettas in a Vase" things. You guys hate them as much as me?

I was at Wal-mart a week or so ago and they had this "Betta in a vase" on display. I thought it was empty. But I saw something white wriggling in the roots. I shook the plant and this beautiful white betta came swimming out. He had be tangled in the roots. Poor baby. :-(

The next day I went to Wal-Mart again and the white betta was gone...but the vase was still there with a new victom.:-(

They are evil and popular. My librarian (at school) has them my sisters friend has them. My other sisters friend had them.

I think they should be taked off the market.
:-( :-( :grr:

HI. Maybe you could go in and talk to the manager of the fish department and explain what's wrong with 'betta in a vase' setups they have. They might not be aware of the problems.

Also, sometimes they are done more or less correctly. As long as there is room for the betta to breathe from the air somehow, and enough space for him, and a straw or some other means of feeding him, he should be quite healthy.

Problem with most stores are they just don't give a sh*t about the fish. All they're concerned about is selling.

Yes it isnt fair on betta's how they get such small space and practilly nowhere to go I woulda grabbed a net taken him out and put him in another bigger tank  but thats just me. We have little dividers that they have over here where they sepaerate them and the box is about 5cmx5cm really small.

For attempting to drop food down I guess...

Poor bettas, despite being able to cope with higher levels of toxins than some other fish can, they still need water changes and heat. Just because they have a 'straw' so you can drop food down doesn't make keeping them in a vase okay.
:-(

You do realize that we're talking about Wal*Mart here, right?
They're very aware of all of it. But they don't care, they don't need to care.

Exactly.

The hanging one is nasty. But I actually had a betta vase when I was in young. I had no idea, my mom and I just picked up one of those DIY sheets at Wal Mart. But ours said, bettas don't eat roots, and to leave room for him to breath at the top and to feed him betta pellets. I cleaned it regularly and he lived for over 2 years that way. My vase was also over 1 gallon. But yeah, I agree, most people won't take as good care as I did and if they don't get that info sheet, the stupid employees would probably tell them something wrong.

Even at the LPS, they have one on display and this girl I know who works there won't even tell them to get rid of it!

Honestly, it's not like it's something we haven't seen before. Here's an idea, let's try complaining to the supplier instead of on here :p
