Is this a good idea? My daughter has fallen in love with them. I have been showing her the fish at the lfs so she can help me choose what we have, have explained that some can't live with each other so she knows we can't just pick any. She is really taken with male bettas though. Would I be better getting her a little tank to keep one in on his own or could we have one in our community tank with the right stock?

ime i have kept 1 male in a community tank and 5 females in another and they have been fine. but if you can get a smaller tank thats prob a better bet.

IMO either . i think bettas look nicer in their own tanks or with a few bottom dwelers, but have had them in community tanks with no problems.

I have 2 as "community" bettas, but i monitored them closely and these are 2 quite mellow boys (one's in with platies, the other is in with rummynose, cories and shrimp). Really depends on the betta's personality and the tankmates.

I think having one in his own smaller tank is cool - you can have some cories and shrimp if your boy is cool with that:)

Quite. It depends on their personality, IMO. Read my sig btw.....

Thanks all, had a chat with her today and we agreed that if she shows me that she can help with the fish and keep her room tidy so it's safe for a fish we will think about a betta of her own in a tank of his own in a few months. Then went to a different pet shop (a chain in a big shopping centre) who had male bettas in with various fish and looking ok. So I got all the 'whys' and we're back to square one! lol.

There was also a betta in one tank who was lying on the bottom gasping for air which upset her. Couldn't see a member of staff to tell unfortunately but she definitely doesn't want one of theirs as they don't look after them.

she could have a nice group of colourful females in a community/sorority set up

awwhhh but doesnt she want one of her OWN?! i definitely would :D

Explain they are just like people, some have learnt to share and some havent! LOL. It really is down to personality and in the stores when they do put them in communities if you look closely it has not always worked as there will be ripped fins or a completely stressed out betta. You can try in the community but you would need a back up plan and tank just in case!
