I have a 20G High and I wanted to keep a betta in there, but wanted a community tank. Is this possible? I'm used to more loaches and other (bigger) fish, but I had this tank laying around w/ a heater, light, and filter, and I'm like whatever. So, one male betta, maybe like 11 Neons? Any better tank ideas w/ a male betta as the centerpiece? Experienced w/ danios, tetras, dwarf puffers (no-go on this one), cories, etc. And only tiny fish. I don't want any fish that are gonna need to go into my "big" tank.

Danios will probably do better with the Betta than anything else. No tetras as they are all pretty nippy, even the neons. So maybe some longfin (or regular) zebra or leopard danios? Then a group of cories as bottom dwellers would finish the tank off nicely. I would do lots of (preferably live) plants too. I have seen people keep bettas with neons but I think thats rather the exception than the norm.

Remember that it all depends on the betta too. They all have different personalities so try to get one that more laid back. That way they will be less likely to nip at smaller fish.

i had tetra in my 14.5 gallon community with my betta and they nipped him so steer clear there, my betta loved danios, but some bettas don't like the constant movement, harlequin or hengel's rasboras are very peaceful small shoaling fish I'd recommend, also white cloud mountain minnows, and cories people find good friends!

ive found that xray tetras are usualy ok, but i wouldnt risk it to be honest. perhaps get a group of female betta of different colours, mabey 5 or 6 of them, and you are slightly less restricted as to what will go with them, as they dont suffer from fin nippers as badly
