Hello!!

my Male fighter has started eating the tails of my guppies, i thought it may have been my loach as the fighter has a few bites on him too. However i have given up to consensus and decided to house my fighting fish separately.

I don't have much cash so the fighter will be moved into a simple plastic tank, it is quite large but has no built in light. I will add a small bubble box filter and a heater, but i will start filtering the tank today.

what is the best set-up for the fighter? do they like gravel and lots of plants??

what other fish could live with the fighter?

please help as i will be purchasing the necessities 2moro.

thanks!

Most fighter container don't have much except a thin layer of gravel and a floating plant or two. Most don't even have a filter but a filter will help keep the water cleaner for longer meaning you do less work and the water stays cleaner.
Male fighters are usually best kept on their own in small containers. In bigger tanks they will usually get along with most small peaceful fishes but some fish will bite the fins of the fighter, and some fighters will kick the hell out of other fish in the tank.

i have put the fighter in its own tank with a plant to hide behind a simple bubble box filter, sand as the substrate and a slate to hold the filter in place. he seems a lot happier, and so do the guppies that he was killing!

although the guppies and mollies now look like they are suffering secondary infections the loach and sucker seem fine. When i go to work 2moro i will try and purchase some medicine for the guppies, and some melafix. is it okay to use both together?

thanks!

I haven't used Melafix for years but I believe it is safe to use in conjunction with other medications.

yeh, it is but I would get an API med if you can because it comes from the same lab as Melifix and they test them together (ok to use together) remember the antibiotic will kill the filter, you might try Melafix on it's own for a short time to see if you get results
