Hi all, I have a male HM betta, and hes looking abit tatty. For some reason his fins always split on the ends. Have you any advice?

I keep him in a 30l tank with a few tank mates, I have tried segregating him from the tank mates in his own little space but he does not improve, so I do not think its the tank mates. I change his water 25% once a week.
Is there anything else I can do to help him? Also I test his water every other week and always comes out fine.

Here he is, He looks better in the flesh

Thanks Westwood. :santa:

I have all live plants, But I do have some rocks which are pointy but not sharp. (couldn't think a way to explain it!)

what tank mates do you have? they could be nipping, or maybe he is tail biting. a good test to know if it is too "pointy" is to get like a thread of nylon and se if it breaks when you run it over the sharpest surface of the rock

filter is fairly good, there are some high flow parts, but there are parts of the water where it is quite still. He likes to rest on top of the filter.

I have:
1 Apisto Panduro (which I know is not the problem)
7 Cory habrosus
5 Celestial micro Rasbora

Will try the "pointy" test on the rocks next time I do a water change.(you can just see the rocks in the photo of him)

Thanks so far!

it might be the rasbora's

This could be completely and entirely irrelevant and pure coincidence (or poor caring on my part :( ), but the tail of one of my Bettas deteriorated as yours is doing for about 2 weeks before he got dropsy. Just worth keeping an eye on maybe.

However, Rasboras, in my experience can be a bit nippy, especially at feeding time, so perhaps keep a close eye on them then.

If it is nipping, separation and plenty of clean water and good food will help his tail grow back. (Melafix could also be added to prevent infection) :good:

Ok, will keep a eye on the Rasboras. :good: Have got another tank I can move them to anyway. I will try to do 2x25% water changes a week, and will watch for any illnesses and infections!

Thanks all! :good:
