I was looking at my betta, he has a 1/2 gallon bowl and ive had him for over 2 years, and i noticed a small white blob with black on his top fin, at the edge. i never saw it until yesterday. Do you know what this is??

Not much to go on, but it sounds from your description that it has had some sort of an abrasion. This would account for the white blob, and the black may be a sort of fish scab or blood blister. If it is an open wound you need to keep a careful eye on it as the site will be open to all sorts of pathogens. Fungal infection being the first. You may want to treat the water with a little med to lower the bacterial bloom. Some of my other friends may have an answer for you.

As the "Master Sturgeon Surgeon" mentioned. It sound's like a tear on his fin. Keep the water clean(should be normal practice) and keep an eye on it. You could try adding some melafix but it's a bit expensive and as long as the waters clean you shouldn't need it. As to the cause it could be anything from a rock to the filter to another fish. If the filter has a powerfull flow from it it may be an idea to direct it against the side of the tank so the water force isn't as powerfull.

No probs m8. lol To many peeps using MSS so I thought I'd beter drag it up correctly  8)

In my workplace we have to take account of MSS all the time.

Although this does stand for Mystery Shopper Survey   :D

lol. THe bank had one in when I went in to complian last week. They didn't get a nice review that week. lmao

Feargal.
Had a look about the site you linked to. I may have missread the article"swimbladder problems~betta fry" But swim bladder is caused by air not by force/overfeeding, thats constipation. there are a couple of other things that seem amiss. the sight could be really old and not been updated for a while. I hope you check other places rather than just using that one.
The Vit B12 is good though.
Just thought I should let you know/check incase any probs arise for you.

Thx adeyc,

But this was just an article that I came across that looked like it might be relevant (with the fin damage on the Siamese Fighting Fish). I do indeed look at many, many websites. :D

no DS I'm not a civil service although I do work within the Public Sector (Until PPP) anyway.

I work for London Underground (someone has to)

only thing wrong with London underground is the smell. and thats just the commuters. lol ever noticed that no-one makes eye contact on the underground. are they all chicken or just unadventurous.
