Would one male Betta be compatible with several Guppies in a 35gallon tank?
Also, would cory catfish and glass catfish work?

Ta :)

i dont think it would be best to keep bettas and guppies together, my female betta ripped half my guppy's tail off :-( its a pretty scary thing to see

not sure about the catfish, but someone else will help u with that :D

i wouldn't reocmment the guppies either, though it IS a big tank. You could try it, but be warned that the guppies might have shredded fins if the bettas find them. cory cats should work great with bettas as they don't deal with bottom dwellers much so you should be fine :)

Betta's and guppies is a bad idea like Whiskerz and cutecotton said... unless though you are 100% sure that the betta you had or are buying is peaceful, gentle and really calm. I've seen betta's and guppies go together many time and most of the time it comes out with really bad result but if you had a gentle betta like I said then it will be fine, but only then!
Corydoras and Glass Catfish will work out fine, nothing to be worried about :)

Do these answers hold if the Betta were female?

Alternatively, how easy is it to seperate the tank so that the Betta could be kept seperate? Is it as easy as sliding in a piece of clear acrylic for example? Maybe one with many small holes so filter still gets the water etc...

i've had bettas that have attempted to eat guppies, some ate the smaller guppies. some people alos think that some male bettas think that a guppy with large colourful fins is actually another male betta. :D

  Sorry that's kinda funny but very sad too!! I didn't know female bettas could do such damage!!!

heya,

whoa never had such an experience with the female bettas before! i kept 5 in a 25G with 3 guppies and they were fine! nobody had even a scratch on them :/ it's just the males that i would worry about, the feamles should be okay (relatively anyways, but be prepared if things go wrong).

and yeah you can just put a divider into the tank to sepreate the male

what ever you do don't get a betta and guppies. i had guppies already and got a male betta because i absolutely love them as they are so beatiful but he ate away my male guppies tail, luckilly i had put my females in a breading net the same evening as getting the betta as they are both heavily pregnant. sadly I am going to have to get rid of the betta. the reason that they don't get on is because if there is a fish with any colours or flowy fins, the betta mistakes it for another male betta, they are also called fighing fish because if you put two males in the same tank they will fight untill one of them dies. plus they are naturally qhite agressive usually.
im sad to have o get rid of him because hes so prity to look at but i had to choose between guppies and bettas and with a betta i can only have one prity fish in the hole tank, i think the females are ugly.

Wow I must have hit the jackpot for well behaved bettas. I have two tanks with bettas and guppies. I have 3 females and a male in one accompanied with 4 guppies only. The other tank a male and female betta with 6 guppies and 5 platties and thats not counting the babies. Just experiment and keep your eyes peeled on the tank at all times (good luck with that) If it doesen't work out for you try something else. I know ...easy said than done. :)

Very old post

Although, i have kept females with female gupps in the past

and they will not fight till the death in many cases one will back down long before, although the stress would probably kill it

that said i have kept 2 males together in a 30gal tank (sibling 'females') and there was not one bit of aggression between the two, however they are now seperate and a lot of flaring goes on

Since it's a large tank you would be able to to keep the guppies and the betta together, i've had guppies and a betta in a 29 gal together before and the guppies were never bothered.
