You cant mix goldfish and fancy goldfish so bettas and goldfish are a no no !

They were wrong. It would most likely die depending on the natural tempature of the water. The betta would be outcompeted for food if it's a common goldie and it's just basically a bad idea.

Sorry. If you have a gold fish there are other things that can go with them that are suited. If you haven't already, out a topic in the coldwater section and you'll see, or do a search.

what many gallons UK would 2 normal goldfish & 1 fancy gold fish need

No, they should not be kept together. The common will outcompete the fancy for food.
