hey i was wondering since i was planning to spawn my bettas soon if anyone else here would like to join and we can compare on how our spawns our doing and we can update every so often. just a thought

oh cool yay
ok theres a 1 week conditioning period from jan 14 til jan 21 on jan 22 u can spawn your bettas how ever method works for u .
and if more ppl join we can turn this into a contest to see who has best bettas but need 2 categories. breeding stock and petstore bettas. if anyone wants to join u have until the 22 after that no more entries since we've already started the spawn process

I don't think you should be encouraging a contest of this nature. Many people will attempt it without thinking where they will put 200 containers to keep them warm, how they will fit 2+ hours of feeding and water changes into thier schedule, and where all of these fish will go.

Furthermore, it's rather irresponsible to encourage people to breed veiltails randomly. You might want to review the pinned topic on betta breeding for more in-depth information on the topic.

oh i've already bred bettas before so i already kno what im getting into and now that u posted what u have hopefully others will read and think before they join. i think all breeding starters should start with petstore bettas bcuz if some thing wrong happens and the breeders die atleast u didnt spend a bundle.

The problem is, what if all goes well? Veiltails are notoriously difficult to get rid of. I would recommend spending the money on a quality pair - losing bettas in during breeding happens to the top breeders in the world, not just new breeders.

From the words of an upcoming master, our very own wuvmybetta -

Also, don't breed veiltail bettas. Lovely though they may be, there are millions and millions of homeless veiltails out there, so don't contribute to the "betta in cup" market. Get a nice, quality pair of bettas to breed with. You should have no trouble getting rid of quality betta fry :)

You haven't yet had a successful spawn, correct?

my 2 cents....

i don't think that this "contest" would really encourage people to just throw their bettas together for a spawn (certainly not me)...it's not like there is a big prize or something....

there are several first-time or new breeders here who have posted about upcoming spawns, and i think this would be a good way for them to share the highs and lows and for us who aren't ready for breeding to all share in the process

just a thought from a newbie, non-breeder

(although i am playing devils advocate here, i also don't want to encourage the betta in a cup industry) :D

by myself i have not had a fully successfull spawn but during the summer i did spawn my betta with my cousin betta and everything happened at my house. my LFS gladly took in my bettas when they grew to adult.
but since no one is joing lets drop this thread and move on...
