Betta Fish Plays Dead When It Sees Me

ok so I bought a new betta fish and I have it set up in a 5 gallon tank with heater and filter anyways i'll be setting in my room doing school and look up at the tank and see him zipping around and having fun but when I get close to the tank and he sees me he freezes and floats to the bottom of the tank when I leave and come back he is swimming happily again. why is this?

I'd try teaching him to hand feed from you! Then he'll love seeing you in the room lots of folks on here get their betta to eat from their hands

Like Amber says, just make him realise that you're friendly.
 
Mine comes to see me whenever I wander past.  You're probably seeing a mechanism of him being scared.
