Hi, I bought my Betta, Squib, a couple weeks ago and his tail had always seemed sort of ragged and I figured he had once had finrot and his tail had never fully healed. However now it seems to be getting worse, I have been giving him API Liquid Fungus Care as it said it can help with fin/tail rot but it really doesn't seem to be helping. Has anyone had any luck using this medicine? And if not what has been successful for you and your fish? Also my sisters Guppy has really bad finrot aswell (again the meds don't seem to be helping), any help with this would be great also.

Info:

-I bought my betta a few weeks ago
-He had been living in a 2 gallon bowl(with weekly water changes)up until a few days ago
-Now he's in a filtered 4.5 gallon tank
-Tank temp is usually around 25 degrees C
-He's acting completly normal (eats like a pig, swims around)

Thanks in advance for your help

*I WILL NOT BE ON THIS PAGE RIGHT NOW BUT PLEASE POST*

(His tank water is green because of his medicine)

From my personal experience, he's fine if he's still acting normal. If he begins to lose his appetite or is no longer active/alert, then be concerned.

Some of my long-tail bettas from time to time had cuts or rips in their tails just like yours. They eventually grew back.

Thanks for your reply! That actually makes me feel alot better. I really like this little guy so I was really worried I might loose him. Thanks again :)

Up the water changes; I was recommended elsewhere that 50% water changes for 10 days would help :). If in doubt, water change.

My boyfriends tank had fin rot; we did a massive water change and the following day all signs had gone :)

Thanks, I'll try that in both tanks (my betta and my sisters Guppy). :D 50% water changes shouldn't be too hard to do in either tank. Thanks again!

how are your fish's fins doing? any healing? or getting worse?
cheers

To me just in general he does look better.

Although I am a little bit confused on one thing that depending on the answer will tell you if he's improving or not. I'm not sure what almost transparent fins are caused by. I read two different answers, one saying that transparent fins were a sign of fin rot the other saying it was the regrowth of damaged fins. He has sort of an outline of transparent-ish fin along his lower and tail fin. If someone could tell me if this is a good or bad sign it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. (I might be able to post a pic of it tomorrow)

ps. loraxchick, thanks for asking about Squib :D

i've seen tranparent fins on one of my girls where her fins that were damaged by another girl once they started to grow back, they're now returning to normal colour

thats good news that the fish seems to be improving :)

to end the condfusion about the fins:

i think the use of the word transparent is what is confusing you. new growth is found at the edges/margins of the fins and looks clear-ish (transparent) with just a "hint" of color. the tissue will color up over time. a good sign that the fins are healing and growth is starting.

for finrot, the membranes between the rays become thin and almost see-thru (transparent-but not lacking in color). will also notice very small pin-holes in the membranes. THAT is a sign of finrot.
also finrot does not have to be white or fuzzy margins on the fins as ive so often seen folks say here. can affect any portion of the fins. the easiest way to detect is to check for the thinning of membrane or pinholes (As well as the fins getting shorter/ragged-sometimes dramatically, or large chunks seemingly gone missing. again, not always with white edging)
hope that cleared up any confusion about the word "transparent"
keep us posted on your fish's health :)
cheers

Thanks for all your help! Although now I'm still confused. Is it possible that he is getting better on some parts of his fins but not all? Is is possible that some of it could just be tearing? He has a sort of route he tends to swim which ends in him dragging his fins for a moment as he turns around...ok well anywho, in the mean time I will do 50%water changes as previously suggested although today he is getting a full water change. I have another question, he uses a bubble filter with filter floss and carbon, if I change all the water should I change the filter too? Could the fin rot be living in the filter? Wow never realized how much of a newbie I was...ok again thanks for everyones help...I will post a pic today of him.

Ps. He is still acting and eating normally.
