Is it possible to keep a male and female betta together for long periods of time and let nature runs it's course without removing either one?

I'd say no and most other people would say no, they will fight to the death even if they have spawned.
You could keep them in the same tank if you devided the tank, thats the better option if you really wanted a male and female.

Can i just say before a mod says.... you need to reduce the size of your sig, its way too big. :good:

i cant figure out how 2 reduce the size of my sig.
what other small fish could i add with a betta?

simple answer... no.

you will occasionaly get a compatible pair that are chilled out and never have any problems, but these tend to be the exception rather than the rule. if they did breed, or attempt to breed (a comunity tank is no place for betta to spawn) you will end up with dead fish if you leave them together, the male will be extremely defensive of his nest and egs and he will kill anything that comes in his territory.

you could i imagine get away with this in a very very large tank that is densely planted and has very vew occupants

I've done this before, if you have a large enought tank (10gallons minimum) and the tank is very densly planted (so much so that if you look through the side of the tank you can't see the other side.), you'd leave a small swimming space up front, and it should be fine.
