Today Galan died after a week's sickness during which he did not respond to multiple treatments. I asked my lfs guy today, and he said it was 'betta disease' and very common.

Can anyone tell me what this is, and how it should be treated?

I have never heard of "betta disease" I would have had to ask him all about it and how it is treated. I am sorry for your loss.

I know a lot about bettas and i've never heard of "betta disease" i think ur lfs is full of something, lol. can you describe exactly what was wrong with your fishie?

sounds like your lfs couldnt explain whats happened and fobbed you off with a betta version of "neon disease". dont think betta disease exists, they know that, but couldnt explain why it died so cave you an excuse

Yes you can get finrot with columnaris.
With the columnaris the finrot is a secondary bacterial infection.
Once they start to mount up the odds go down on saving the fish.
R.I.P.
Taken from the link I provided.
sometimes so severe as to cause the skin to look as if it is shedding or peeling, with the fins disintegrating.

I'would strip it down to be honest sounded like a bad strain of columnaris.

I clean my tanks with abit of bleach, rinse well, then let the tank dry out for one day,
Are the plants real.
I would steralise the bogwood in boiling water.
Salty water for the filter, I run it in a bucket, then add clean fresh water to rinse it through, then let all the equipment also dry out for one day.

You can steralise plants, ask in the plants section of the forum.
