Hi guys...

we lost Boris...our pride and joy. In the space of 24 hrs (actully less) he went from a typical Betta to something that looked like it had been through a bleaching process. His tail rotted then it continued down his body till he died. Also we lost 3 other fish with the same symtoms. We isolated the fish in another tank but 2 died almost immediatly (i guess in shock). Now we are worried about our 200ltr tank lightly planted tank.

We have left...

2 Female fighters
2 Female Swordtaisl
2 Male Swordtails
3 Blue Dwarf G's
5 Mollies
2 Panda Corys
2 Pepper Corys
2 Bristlenose Plecs
1 Siamese algae eater
1 redclawed crab

as you can see its not overcrowded but its a worry. Tank conditions are good, all levels normal and good aeration. What I'm nervous about is its killing the fish over such a short period of time (i thought it could be fin rot but is it that quick?). Anyone have any idea's? A poor image of one of the dead fish is attached (fingers crossed)..

many thanks for any response...

It sounds like you have a very virulent strain of bacteria in your tank. I would begin treating immediately with antibacterial medicines and if possible, isolate any fish that begin to show symptoms.

We tried/trying Myaxcin (spelling?) in the big tank now, not sure if its doing any good, in the hospital tank liquasil(once again spelling). Plus 10% water changes daily (did a 30% last week). LFS recommended both though they didnt seem to know what it was. IF we have any more fatalites i dont know what to do. :(

I would guess all the fish would be infected now, so after treating the tank and still no improvement will i need to start from scratch again? Our confidence is running low now with this set back but i love the hobby and i love my fish. (never thought i would get attached to them as much as this).

Just trying to do the best for them...

I would try adding maracyn 2 into the mix incase the bacteria are gram positive. Maracyn only treats gram negative bacteria. Also, try slowly raising the temperature. Antibiotics work better at a higher temperature.

Right sounds like columnaris did the patch run along the body coming down the sides, you will need anti fungus and finrot med by interpet, increase aeration, and also it would be wise to get the anti internal bacteria med by interpet as well, start of with the fungus med first.

Hmm Just Thinking... Was The Betta Who Died A Male? If He Was He May Of Been "Picked" On By The Gouramies. They May Of Been Nipping His Tail Down To The Bottom And The Stress Killed Him. Although It May Not I Felt The Need To Point It Out.
