Betta Compatible Organisms

dwarf cories would work, shrimp can be a hit and miss generally if you go for larger shrimp such as Amano's they are left

I would keep a school of 8 dwarf or pygmy Corys and 8 ember tetras or espei (not harlequin) rasboras or emerald rasboras (Danio erythromicron) or galaxy rasboras.

How many cories would be good? I have owned a few types of cats but not cories and i heard they need a school

All of those fish in one tank? or just one school and the betta?

I have kept my Betta with several different species of cories as well as temporarily with several tropical live bearers. Some Bettas love tank mates while some would rather kill anything than look at it. All based on temperament.

1 Betta
8 Corys
8 mid-water schoolers

You should probably get the Corys first and, depending on how you think the tank feels/looks, the schoolers later. As mentioned above, some Bettas don't deal well with tank mates and Corys are usually the safest choice.
