Hello,
I noticed my betta was moving rather quickly in his 10 gallon tank. It looked like he was trying to rub the right side of his body about 3 times (once on the side of the tank, and twice on the silk plant). I know this is sometimes a sign of ick, but he seems fine as I've had him for about 2 weeks now, and he's built bubble nests, is active, and is eating fine. I don't see any signs of ick on him, and I've looked closely.

Then he swam up to the heater. I was thinking: "NO! Don't!"). Then he quickly swam away from the heater (he probably burnt himself). The heater is a Hagen Tronic heater (50W) I had it running @ around 75F-77F. I used to have it around 78F-80F, but I remember touching if before with my thumb really quickly when the heater light was not lit (when it was "off"), and it still felt pretty hot. I even have the Tronic heater guard for it that covers the bottom part of the heater (where the heater element is), but the part I was touching was the middle part that is exposed (where the pilot light/thermo-sensor is).

Then I noticed when he was swimming his right side pectoral fin isn't moving! :-(

After about 5 minutes his right side pectoral fin is moving now. :)

But I'm worried still. He doesn't seem to be trying to rub himself on any part of the tank now.

What about people that breed Bettas (or other fish). What if the fry come into contact with the heater? They would be burnt, wouldn't they?

I'm worried, about his fin, I mean it's moving, and it should heal, right? Also, will he stay away from the heater now? I'm not sure if there's anything I can do to help him.

Thanks in advance for any help or information.

Can't help with your problem, but sounds like you might want to change your heater. I have a fluvaltronic 50w (short 6") heater in my quarantine, I put the heater guard over it - the one that comes in 2 snap together segments. The only exposed part with the pilot light and sensor never gets got to the touch for me.
