I'm all set for breeding my Betta's and I am currently conditioning them both. Noctis, who is a PK, is making a lovely bubble nest but he only works on it at certain points during the day. The rest of the time he is flaring at the new girl who is a CT. The thing I don't get yet is how will I know when they are both ready? The little girlie has some lovely Breeding Stripes but I don't want to put her in yet as A. They've only been conditioning for 2 days and B. He still goes mad whenever she moves and rushes up to flare at her... They are both about 1-1/2" long and so both a good size but even though she's showing the correct signs, he isn't yet... I don't know whether this pair will work and I can't breed him with my other female, who is also a CT, because she's too small for him. He'd kill her in seconds.
Any advice on what to do? Obviously they are separated but they can see each other and she's all up for it but he just wants to fight her.

They need to be conditioned for at least two weeks.

Keep them separated until they are done conditioning.

Is this your first spawn attempt?

What size tank do you have as a grow out tank for the fry? Do you have enough tanks/jars to isolate the male fry when they get aggressive? What are you going to feed the fry? How are you planning to keep all those jars warm when you have to isolate the males?

Not trying to drill you, these are just all the things you need to make sure you have covered before your breed your bettas, as you could have 50+ males and 100+ fry.

I have been preparing for breeding betta's for 2+ years. Reading up on it at every chance I get. I have a large cupboard full of Jars and the cupboard has a small heater in to keep the temp of water at about 24-26 Degrees Celsius. I tested it by putting water in all the jars and leaving them for a week, checking the temp daily and it stayed steady. Those closer to the heater were at 26 Degrees, those farther away were at 24 Degrees. I have a 2ft grow out tank with a stand, heater and filter. I know they need to be conditioned for at least 2 weeks which is why she is still separated from him but he is being really nasty towards her while she just wants to breed, she has really dark Vertical Stripes on her which fade when he flares but at other times they are really prominent.

It is my first Spawn attempt as it's the only Male fighter who has been nice enough, in my eyes, to spawn.

right for now i'd seperate them so they can't see each other, then towards the end of conditioning add her in a 'chimney'

Why would you do this? All of what I've read, including on here, has said to keep them separate but in full view of each other.
I'm not being rude just saying what I've read and learnt from other people. Also what do you mean by a 'Chimney' never heard this expression in aquarium talk...

i conditioned mine seperate and out of view of each other then after the 2 weeks i added the female in a tub/jar what ever you want *most refer to this as the chimney ;)* in the later afternoon next morning i released the female and they spawned straight away, no chasing nipping nothing, both fish came out of the spawn with prefect finnage

OK, thank you. I'll try this. I hope this works as having he female there is the only thing that has made him build a bubble nest...

mine didn't build 1 until after i put her in but by that time both were ready so it worked well, he nested over night and release in the morning :)

OK, thank you lilfishie. I know to trust what you say as I know you've successfully bred Betta's.

Just setting my 2nd up as we speak :)

Everyone does it differently though, this worked for me 1st time round whether it will this time we'll soon see

You don't know how much I need to thank you though as I've had a few male betta but none have been good enough for me to want to spawn them and now I get this lovely PK male and he doesn't seem to like it! Just typical isn't it?

Yes very Typical, the female i am using now i had set up a few days back with another male but she didn't like him :/
