now im not planning on breeding any bettas ( not for a goooood while anyway ) but im slightly confused as to choosing pairs. now i know that vt's are best avoided re breeding - but im more curious about breeding different colour traits together.

for example , would it be unthinkable to breed a copper betta to say a white betta , ? what do you get from these types of spawns ; 50% copper and 50 % white , or could you get a mix? are such mixes ugly?

hoping this makes sense :p

Breeding two colors won't necessarily produce offspring (as you see with the copper X opague) that are either one color or the other - nor a mixture for that matter.
In fact, a 'mixture' of two colors is one of the things you almost certainly won't get (eg: mixing a blue and a yellow won't give you green :p).
If you want to be able to predict the outcome of a breeding, you need to know a bit about betta genetics and a little about the parent's own genetic make-up (ie: you need to know about their own parents, grandparents etc). You can only know about the bettas' history if you got/get them from a breeder unfortunately. But even if you don't/didn't, you can make some educated guesses based on what the fish look like. BUT, you'll need to read up on genetics first.
