Have a lovely blue Betta in a 2ft tank and last week added 10 neons. The bettas lovely flowing fins have mysteriously got much shorter! Would it be the neons? They're such a small and harmless lookng fish though!! Haven't seen them doing it but aren't watching them all the time. Can't move him to my 3' as I have another male in there. Can't put my neons in there either as my big angel will eat them!

neons have been know to nip bettas fins so proberly
section off a piece of the tank with a divider for the betta. also PLANT IT UP for cover! if you cant realistically restrict the betta from the neons (in another small tank for example) consider rehoming him)
all the best

I keep mine with neons against all advice, and they have been fine. However, I get the feeling I have been super lucky as the neons are notorious for nipping fins.

So yes, it's probably the neons. Either make/buy a divider, get a new tank, move the neons or re-home neons/betta.

has anybody here ACTUALLY seen neons in their experience nip fins...i for one have kept hundreds with other fish with flowing fins and never have they been nipped.

i would be happy to keep a betta with neons

Yeah, I've seen them do it. Mostly to each other, but they can be right little gits. Scared of the betta though ^^

Seen then go for betta in lfs as well.

maybe the betta in question's tail got caught in the filter intake and that's why it "disappeared"....worth considering and an easy fix.

How about Cardinal Tetras? I was thinking about getting a shoal and putting them in my tank which has 3 female bettas, no male.

Good or bad idea?

Depends on their temperament, the females. And the cardinals as well I suppose. Personally I think Bettas should be kept alone (males or females), or in sororities.

get javanese rice fish or lamp eyes go well with bettas and dont nip - even betta rutilans (in my avatar) mix well with betta splendens

Saw the little gits really going for Oz's fins today. In 24 hours they've halved the size of his tail.

I won't be keeping betta with those neons again. It's all down to temperament, and those 7 are getting big and bolshy in the tank.
