OK, so long story short, I have a Betta in a 5.5g hex tank with some shrimp and khuli loaches. I also have a Bolivian Ram and Keyhole which, along with the latter, were all in my 50g. I have now got a 168g for my large Cichlids, and am looking for a way to keep all my fish without being overrun with tanks.

It was suggested to me a while ago that if I got a 115g or thereabouts, I could have the Betta, plus chums, and the Dwarf Cichlids in together.

So would this be OK in a 115g:

1 x male Betta
1 x Bolivian Ram
1 x Keyhole
4 x Khuli loaches
2 x Amano shrimp (large)

Would I have room to add anything else, like a small school of non-nipping fish and another Ram or Apistogramma?

ive kept a betta, rams and keyholes together in a 50g tank without any issues so they should be more than fine in a 115g tank. u have heaps of room left for fish btw

In a 115L you could probably get away with
1 x male Betta
2 x Bolivian Ram 1M 1F
2 x Keyhole 1M 1F
8 x Khuli loaches
6 x Amano shrimp (large)

Thanks, I'm not adding anymore shrimp though as they create more mess than they get rid of  I have 2 already, so they will go in there.

I'd get some more Khulis as they like being in a big group, plus they can have sand again like in the old tank.

Sounds good the shrimp might get a few nips of the cichlids but i dont think that will be to big a problem.

Cool, I'm not bothered about the shrimps as they grew up with the Ram and Keyhole in the larger tank, so will be fine. Was more concerned about the Betta getting nipped!

I also have kept my betta with a Keyhole with a Bolivian ram along with some tetras and plecos. My betta has been fine never nipped but does spend more time hiding then out being cute. When I kept my betta alone he was more out going and confident. when kept with other large fish they become shy.

I still have my betta in the community tank now with 3 Festivum and 1 ram. the betta is fine but still a bit more on the shy side. Fines are fine no nips.

The betta should be fine as all your other fish inhabit the bottom of the tank while the betta will stick mainly to the top. Make sure you have a couple of patches of plants that reach the top of the tank for your betta to hide in if it needs to. Otherwise it all looks good

Ah, we've decided to keep my 190L tank afterall so Sherbert and the shrimps can stay in their hex, and the Khulis and Dwarf Cichlids (and mister plec) can be in the 190L all together. Would feel mean taking them out of a nice big tank and putting them in a smaller one.

May be back to get some ideas for schooling fish for the 190L, but will probably get some Rainbows and some more Khulis.
