Betta Acting Funny

I just got a new king betta and he seems happy but started acting a little odd. He hangs out in this spot by the filter/heater where there is a little hole in the back of the tank lid. It looks like he wants to jump out or maybe he thinks thats a spot food would be since the rest of the tank is covered.

Also he keeps like jumping at the filter waterfall, you know where the water comes back into the tank with a standard hanging filter. I keep thinking hes getting stuck in the filter or something. It almost like hes playing with the water, not sure why hes doing it.

He is very curious and moves around a ton so maybe hes just exploring his big new tank. Hes in a 30 gallon with only two dwarf frogs, coming from a tiny little container at petco. He seems very interested by everything, just wondering if any of your bettas have done similar things.

Jackson sleeps/hangs out at the top of my filter, between that and the glass near the water line...every time i look i think he's stuck..but he sees me and swims towards me..
He also the other day was darting left and right through my bubble wall..like he was playing with it.
they are really cute creatures huh?

Yeah i think he is just playing. He chases bubbles at the top and he also does battle with his reflection on the glass sides a lot. The funniest is when he see ones of the frogs and hes like WHOA what is that! He never hurts them he just follows the frogs and looks lol.

I'm still trying to think of what other tankmates to get. The only thing I know for sure is I will be getting 3 ottos to help keep the tank clean.

I am telling everyone about them because I didn't know what they were til earlier this year, and now I think they are one of the smartest investments in fish care I made!

They are little shrimp-like creatures that eat the waste and Alge and provide great live feed. It's fun watching the Bettas HUNT them! I keep Java moss in my tanks to help denitrify the water (after seeing the photos of a water quality expeiment with them) and the Scuds hide in the java moss and breed. What I've noticed is my Bettas are more active than my boyfriends and others I've heard of... I think it's because they hunt. Besides, I figure it gives them an acrivity to prevent boredom or depression.

I wish someone would told me about them years ago!

HE DIED! He jumped out of the #41#### tank I found him on the floor this morning. =( I knew he was acting funny like he was trying to jump out i cant believe he jumped out of that tiny hole in the back i should have covered it.

The water conditions were fine before i put him in he seemed happy. Arghhhhhh im so sad i just got him!! Are betta known to jump out of tanks even if they are happy?

fine before? tested them since? I've known of fish to jump out of tanks because of poor water quality, in my newbie days

Maybe he just went crazy with the big tank? Who knows how long he was in one of those small containers at petco, i dunno what kind of water they keep them in in those tiny cups either. Maybe its some special solution and he couldn't take the adjustment?

I'm sorry, the worst part is you kinda knew what he was thinking before he did it. weird Betta! Too late to do anything now, but can know better for next time.

It may be the filter, my boyfriends Betta Skyrim hated the filter (in no small way!) til we baffled it.

He was a king betta maybe they are a bit weird compared to the other types i know they are more new in the pet stores.

King Betta?
Crown tail or jumbo? I've seen the Thai giants that are double normal size, those are cool!

it has short fins more like a female but yes bigger than normal betta. Poor guy wish i saw him sooner i might have been able to save him. =(

Why have you no Nitrates? were you doing a fish in cycle?

I had a couple african dwarf frogs in a 30 gallon tank thats all. Hopefully they will go up soon.

#136### I just caught my new rainbow shark trying to commit suicide doing the same #41#### thing as my betta!!! I dont get it. My water conditions seem good, the temperature is good. Am i missing something? Maybe water hardness or something???

He seemed fine as well was just hiding alot under a piece of wood and then all of a sudden when im asleep i hear the same noise the betta made when he tried to jump at the filter water and sure enough he was up in the same area looking like he was trying to get out. I covered the hole as best i could with a piece of cardboard.

Ill triple check the water conditions again tomorrow, but I'm at a loss...
