Beta Tank Algae Problem

I have a beta tank with five partitions and another tank with 3 partitions and I am having a problem with algae build up. I have been keeping the light off but I have to install a heater very soon due to temperature drop.... It's getting a little too cold.... Anyway, despite no light and no heater for the past few months I am still getting algae build up.

To solve this, I am looking for small algae eaters. My thought is to put one in each partition as a companion to the betas.

Does anyone have any experience with male betas with other fish?

Does anyone have any other suggestions about keeping the algae under control?

I've got Apple snails in with my boys,they keep the algae at bay,they just poo a lot

I got them from eBay but your lfs should have them
