Best Way To Euthanize Fish

Well to be honest I'm quite blunt about it...I put the fish in a fish bag with tank water. Give it a while to relax and then put it on the ground and use a brick. It is by far the quickest way, you can check a post I put up about a week ago where this was discussed then...alot of opinions which is good :)

Some people use clove oil but this only makes the fish go unconscious, you still have to dispose of them afterwards. Some use a freezer, DO NOT DO THIS!!!

Brick is the quickest but for those that find this too traumatic you can use the clove oil method...but I dont know how you would kill the fish in the end to be honest...I've only got the rough approach!! :)

and that is exactly the method used to put down lab mice when you dont want to damage their brain and nervous system so it is the best way to prevent stress to the creature. If your skilled with a knife and can make a rapid fatal blow first time I dont see any problems with it.

1. Freezer bag, fish, brick, instant death, little mess.
2. plastic box, fish, as small amount of water as possible, loads of Alka Seltzer tablets, CO2 poisoning, death. Better for small fish.

:good:

Ive used the clove oil method to send the fish off to sleep, then followed by a 25%(ish) dose of vodka. Although this took about 30 mins orso for the fish's gills to stop it seemed the method that was preferable to me (cant imagine cutting off the head - knowing me i'd miss  ) and the fish didnt seem to get stressed at all.

Actually Freezing is probably the slowest and most painfull way of killing a fish. Just like humans the blood thickens and clots then ice crystals form and the fish has a heart attack....

I dont think he ment to put them in the freezer!! :) I thought that is what jonesyUK was saying at first but he just said it was the type of bag used! :)

Carbon dioxide poisoning is ok...but it still causes stress. I use carbon dioxide in putting down mice for research but a study showed that they experience considerable stress and fear before they are fully knocked unconscious...it doesn't happen straight away, it takes time for the oxygen to be completely replaced by the CO2 and then some more time for hypoxia to set in.

Brick all the way for the sake of the fish!! :):p

Five pound cinder-block for me. Or you could go the "where the hell would I get clove oil from" way of doing it. :shifty:

please don't use the garbage disposal.
